| I have an intermittent starting problem. I turn the ignition on and all the
correct dash lights come on. When I try to start the engine and I hear a
single click and nothing more. The click sounds like a relay. Then I turn
the ignition off and try to start the engine again and it usually starts,
sometimes I have to try several times. Once, it took several tries to get it
started and on a couple of the tries, the engine started to turn over but
stopped, like the power to the starter was cut off. I have a 1991 Toyota
4Runner with the 3.0L V6. I have cleaned the battery terminals. Is it
possible that I have a bad battery, starter, neutral safety switch, or
ignition switch? |

Ted,
Got the same exact problem. Just keeps getting worse with some days better than others. I'm going to replace the Ignition because i've noticed that depending on how the key is held in the ignition and if i'm using my wife's key which is barely worn it seems to start better. I'll keep you posted.

Replaced the Ignition switch, didn't help at all. Moving onto rebuilding the starter and alternator next. I'll keep everybody posted.

Hey guys, I am also a member of this no starting club on my 91 4runner. I've replaced ignition switch(a real pain), starter, battery, and battery cables; all have been replaced with genuine toyota oem except battery cables went with a higher quality cable. Anyway, I replaced each in steps and the problem did go away..temporarily though...after each new part the problem is fixed for at the most a couple of months then just like the plague comes back to haunt you in the most undesirable moment. My last attempt was taking off the neutral safety switch tested it, still good, cleaned all the gunk off of her, and she started back up. Lets see how long this one will last...any of you guys try anything new? (sorry for the long thread)

Don't know if it will help but MSN carpoint lists two fixes that may keep your 4runner from starting. The first is the oxygen sensor wire harness, needs replacing. The second is Engine main relay, needs replacing. These are both cheap fixes and a good place to check.

can you say "sticky solinoid" get under the truck and hit the starter a few times, I use the handle from a wire brush then try to start the truck I`ll bet it starts, if you have someone to turn the key over while you are at the starter you will hear it shorting out inside the starter, can`t hear it while you are in the truck all you hear is the relay beside the glove box clicking, the relay is not the problem. have a good one and good luck.

Hi:
I have a 1989 pickup, 4 cyl., manual tranny. Have the same problem. Put a new starter and ignition switch and continued with the same problem. Only hear the relay under the glove box. When this happen I checked if there is 12 volts at the cable that goes to the starter solenoid while someone turn the ignition switch. There is No power. So I had to put a push button for starting until the problem is found.

I had the same problem with my '92 4runner. Sometimes it would start up first try othertimes id be in the parking lot for 5 min. It happend to the dealer later that month when i had a cv boot replaced (ugh) and they fixed it all up. The reason is faulty starter contacts which connect the starter to ground during starting. Theyre two copper "L" shaped pieces no larger than a quarter. Hears the bad news... each contact, you need two, is $10.99, and to have the dealer to do the work it was $162.50. I wasnt too happy about that. Well hope to have helped.

I had a 91' SR5 extracab 4x4. I put in 3 new starters in one year. I finally fixed the problem, I bought a '99 Tacoma. However, I did learn that aftermarket starter kills in alarms are known to kill starters. Every time I put in a new starter, it fixed the problem for several months. My problem may be different.

Your message describes the exact same problem I am having with my 91 4Runner (also with the 3.0L V6). I had replaced the battery and many of the connections to it to no avail. The dealer diagnosed it as a faulty starter and is replacing it to the tune of $370. Ouch!
