I Just replaced the bad engine in my '84 Toy with a used one and am having problems keeping it cool. It will run fine for a while holding right around 185-190, (it has a brand new 185 deg. t-stat that I put in when I did the swap). After I have driven it 10-15 minutes the temp. goes up to about 220. Last time it happened I got out and put snow on the radiator and it didn't melt unusually fast. I checked the t-stat in a pan of hot water and it opens at 185. The first time it happened I had fired it up and let it sit at high idle. Outside temp. was around 50. about ten minutes later it was boiling over and the my temp. guage said 235-240 (I was running strait water then). Any ideas.

Outside temp. was around 50. about ten minutes later it was boiling over and the my temp. guage said 235-240 (I was running strait water then). Any ideas. Start simple; Ensure your mixture is correct (coolant/water). Follow the guidlines on the bottle. Try to drive through it if it doesn't get too hot. My 86' gets hot within the same time frame every time the rad. is drained and refilled. Goes down after a few minutes. Trouble is the water pump cavitates due to unequal pressure in the cooling sys. After about 3-4 days it stops. You can drill a hole in the thermostat( 1/8 inch) this will help a great deal. The cooling sys. in these trucks are pretty straight forward so if this isn't your prob. then you have a blockage somewhere. To test for blockage drive it without a thermostat. It should not run hot at all, unless at higher rpm's for extended periods. If it does run hot flush the hell out of w/ a good flush untill it runs cool. Hope this helps.

While I wouldn't want to overburden my smaller engine (2.4L), I've pulled lots with my older truck. We've pulled a two-horse trailer with one horse, a load or two of hay, 6x8 uhauls, a car trailer with a subaru imprezza onboard (hmmm....pulling the 98 car with the 88 truck!! LOL), etc.

The smaller engine takes some patience on big hills and grades, but has no problem pulling moderate loads around town and at reasonable highway speeds 60-65. You're probably planning to purchase a truck with the bigger engine anyhow, so I suspect you'll be fine!

I am looking into buying a Tacoma. I have a professional mobile DJ service & I tow a trailer. (Currently a 5x8, but about to purchase a 6x10) Does anyone have any experience towing with a Tacoma. Good? Bad? Let me know before I make a mistake. Thank you, Olyn D Taylor

I was towing a 6x12 trailer with my 98 pre-runner and it has a 2.7 litre 4 cyl. in it and it towed the trailer better than the 92 jeep cherokee I had with an 4.0 litre six!!!! you'll be fine.
