I have a 2002 Sequoia with 1200 miles. I am having trouble with the VSC warning lights coming on when I am driving.
It has been in the shop twice already and they have not yet found the sourse. They read a code that said the steering
sensor was out of calibration . They adjusted it and thought it was fixed but it still comes on. Took it back and they read
the same code. Anyone else had this problem?

I have the sam problem with my 2002 sequoia. It started within the 1st 500 miles I put on the car. I called the service dept.. They told me to check the brake fluid level. That wasn't the problem. I took it into the shop, they took
it out for a run and said they couldn't find the source of the problem.I have
been going back and forth to them without any success. My next step is to call toyota directly and try and get some straight forward answers from them.
It seems they are aware of this problem but have no soloution. I have notice
the the light come on more frequently if I don't allow the car to warm of 1st.
I don't know if you have noticed that also. I just want this problem resolved.

I have a 2001 sequoia with 16,000 miles. Both VSC Trac and TRAC OFF lights come on - in addition to the brake warning light and the ABS warning light. The service department resets the codes and the problem returns.
The service technicians cannot locate the problem - They suspect the ABS and Trac Control Computers. Similar to Bill's problem, the warning
lights come on more frequently when the vehicle is cold.

I also have a 2002 Sequoia with 1800 miles. The VSC started malfunctioning at 150 miles. However, in addition to the VSC light malfunctioning, 100% the engine power is instantaneously cut - returning the engine to idle and leaving me to coast to the emergency lane. Toyota techs say they cannot recreate the circumstance so they cannot repair. In response, I say I cannot recreate a circumstance as well. The circumstance where I decided to buy a Toyota.

I also have a 2002 Sequoia where the VSC OFF and TRAC OFF lights came on after only 50 miles!!! The lights are on solid all the time (while the engine is running).
The lights indicate that the VSC computer (mounted front right in the engine compartment - with the brake lines running through it) is in fail-safe mode. It does not hurt any components of the truck to have the VSC in fail-safe mode. It does hurt your safety level though…
The dealer service tech says that the steering wheel position sensor (SPS) is at fault– its on order. The SPS is located directly under the dash surrounding the steering column rod. It must be a b-tch to change since the steering rod goes right though it. It looks like the steering rod needs to be disconnected and the whole steering wheel column needs to be pulled back 6 to 8 inches to replace the sensor. Not a good thing for a new car…
Also, a warning label on the SPS and on the VSC computer box says that the VSC “MUST BE INITILIZED”. It seems to be a warning that the VSC initialization procedure must be done before any parts are changed. The dealers may not be doing this procedure…
I have ordered the maintenance manuals to see what the heck it is going to take to replace this sensor, error codes, diagnostic and initialization procedures. I have noted that someone marked a black dot (about the size of this “O”) with a marker on the corner of the warning label. Seems odd…
I can guess that there are other sensor failures that could send the VSC computer into fail-safe. Brake fluid level, sway/yaw, wheel speed (on each wheel), fluid temp, engine computer communication, transmission sensors, etc. Certainly the VSC computer records the reason for the fail-safe as an error code to be read by the service tech through the maintenance diagnostic device. I would not take a “we don’t know” answer from the service tech… I would demand to have the tech give you the VSC computer failure code!
I will post the results of the up coming service experience. I bough a Toyota so that I would not be spending time at an auto service department, but, sadly here I am…

I have a 2002 Sequoia SR5 with basically the same problems that srarted around 10,000 miles. Also the emergency brake light stays on all the time as well. I love the car but I hate little problems especially when it may lead to something bigger.
Has anyone else heard problems with the brakes. I know one person that has had two sets of brakes put on in 10,000 miles. I don't mean pads, I mean brakes. Heard other with same problems. Mine just started making some weird noises this weekend and I'm checking into it tonight. Will post again as soon as I find out.

I have a 01 Sequoia. I had the same problem with the warning lights coming on. Turns out I was low on brake fluid. I added fluid and the lights went off. I do not know if this will solve your problems, but it solved mine. Also, I have 21k miles and I just replaced the front brake pads. I have 50% left on the rears. The brakes suck. David

I have a 2001 Sequoia currently with 36,000 miles. It's been since the early spring this year that the VSC light has been coming on and the VSC tries to stop the car, primarily when I am on a curve. The dealer has hooked up meters to the sensors and of course everything tests out fine so they say they don't know what to do. Whatever is causing this, it is somehow affecting my car which has an awful vibration now when I'm driving. The only way to get it to stop is to put on my brakes which isn't good because usually i'm merging into rush hour traffic. IF ANYONE has had a similiar problem, please email me. Now my warranty is almost up and I'm afraid I'm going to get into an accident. I'd like to collect contact information from other people with the same problems so hopefully as a group we could demand that something be done. PLEASE write to me!

My wife and I are really considering the purchase of a Sequoia, actually we had decided that this is what we ARE buying. This VSC problem and the brake problem is the first negative thing we've heard about the Sequoia. Anyone have any news of late as to the cause or resolution of the problems? We're now considering alternative options OTHER than a Toyota!!!

I have a 2001 Sequoia with 46,000 miles and I've had the same problem with the VSC light coming on, especially making a turn or going over RR tracks and bumps. I repeatedly brought it into the dealer and they stated it was normal, but never looked into it. Well, after a few months I noticed my whole steering wheel would vibrate and thereafter not only my VSC light came on, but my break light as well. I brought it back to the dealer and they stated that it was the Fuel injector that malfunctioned and it was not under warranty (it figures). I contacted Toyota headquarters because I felt that it was a manufacturer problem and I was under the assumption that the fuel injector would be covered under the engine warranty, especially since the vehicle is only a year old. But got no where with them. I suggest that all Sequoia owners get their vehicles checked out (especially the fuel injector) before your warranty runs out. They stated no one has complained with problems with their VSC or Fuel injectors, but if they do, they will consider a refund . If you're having problems with the VSC or anything related, do call headquarters and complain. I have an 1990 Toyota Camry with 186,000 miles and never had problems with it and still don't. That is why I considered Toyota again. But currently I am not happy with Toyota.

| 2004 sequoia with 75,000 miles and the vsc lights have come on along with the transmission light and the vsc tracking lights. They came on for the first time this morning but were still on when I drove the car again at lunch time. Tried putting it in and out of 4WD but no effect. Is this something I can ignore, or could I damage something by continuing to drive? |

Youngqsue - you can still drive your truck without damaging it, but it should be looked at regardless. It's still under warranty, so definately have it checked.
However, if your truck has a suspension lift kit on it, many of them will cause this issue. If that's the case, don't expect any warranty help, as this issue is directly a result of the lift kit and the manufacturer isn't obligated to fix it at no charge.

Thanks for that info. No modifications have been done to the vehicle. I took it to my mechanic, he turned the light out but could not find anything wrong. He drove it on a few short trips and the light did not come back on. I am going to pick it up and drive it and see what happens. If the light comes back on, I will see what the dealer has to say. Thanks again. |
