The automatic wins hands down with crawling... I will agree with you guys there. The only way to do it with a manual is with crawling gears or a splitter. I have always preferred manual transmissions myself, and I don't do any true hard-core rock crawling (maybe that's why). I have an 81 FJ40 with a 350, and stock 4spd and axles. I have 35" tires and have put this truck to the test. I have never heard of any problems using a toyota tranny/drivetrain with a small block, or even a big block for that matter. Definitely not the case for Jeeps 
Some day I plan on putting a 5 speed in there, maybe with a splitter. Another option I have entertained is pulling the transfer case and swapping out the low range gear for something more suitable for crawling.
Bottom line- it depends on your preference and what you plan on doing with the truck. |
