I've got '97 4runner limited 4x4. When I let off of the brakes from a stop, there is a loud 'thud', as if the transmission was downshifting hard. I had the transmission looked at. They changed a few valves, but could not find anything else wrong, and the noise continues. The transmission works flawlessly otherwise.
I have two friends that have 97 4runners, and notice the noise in theirs as well.
I had assumed that it was the transmission, but am no longer fully convinced. Does anyone know what this is? |

I have same problem 2000 4runner and it does this from the day I drove it off the lot with 8 miles on it (brand new)

I have a 99 4Runner with what I think is a brake problem. When I let off the brakes the truck has a loud thud and feels like the brakes are hanging up. I have had it into the dealer five times and they say that there is nothing wrong. Good luck!

I'M HAVING LOTS OF PROBLEMS WITH MY 1997 4-RUNNER. IT HAS 66,000 MILES ON IT AND I'VE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT IT NEEDS A NEW REAR. IT ALSO MAKES THUD SOUNDS AN WINDING SOUNDS.

I have a 97 4runner which we bought used (at about 27K). it has had the problem you describe since the day we bout it. we, too, have taken it to the dealer and they can't replicate the problem. it's now started making the same noise when you start it in the morning when it's cold. it's like it doesn't go in gear and then it engages suddenly. i'm taking it back tomorrow so i'll try to provide an update.
