2001 4Runner w/22,000 miles. Both VSC lights and engine check light stay on steady. Going to dealer on 11/25. Will post results. Seems others are having similar problems with the Sequoia.

Had dealer evaluate problem. They found the gas tank cap loose and said this caused the engine check light to come on which caused the VSC lights to come on. Sounds fishy, but the problem has not returned. ------------ Jeff at 11/25/2002 7:12:56 AM

I had the problem fixed. It was an EVAP cannister, A charcoal filled filter that sits near the gas tank. Good thing it was under warranty b/c they quoted it over 600. to fix. ------------ Jay at 4/15/2003 1:38:18 PM

My 2001 4-Runner self healed. After putting up with those lights for three days, and about to go to a dealer, warning lights did not come on after initial illumination during start up. Its been about five days without problems. ------------ Jay at 4/18/2003 1:00:48 PM

My 2001 Avalon has this problem. The dealer gave me the gas cap excuse in April - cost me $75.00 to reset. Two months later - same thing. Comments welcome. Thanks. ------------ Mel at 4/23/2003 9:51:09 AM

Dealer repaired the problem by replacing a "charcoal filter". Stated that this was causing the check engine light to go on, which in turn caused the VSC lights to go on. (Doesn't make sense, but it does seem to be resolved.)

Cost to Toyota was about $270+ (under warranty).

My neighbor has the 2002 4 Runner. Her trouble lights came on too, saying her VSC was off. I read here what you had to say about taking your truck to the dealer. I tried something on my own and it has worked. Disconnect the negitive battery cable for 15 minutes. This gives the computer a chance to reset its self ( I'm sure that's what the dealer is really doing, but he has to put something else as the problem so he can get paid ). The lights have not come back on since and truck runs great. She only has 31,600 miles on her truck. I don't know why these lights came on, maybe she didn't have the gas cap on right but, tighting it did not reset the computer. If it were something else, something realing wrong I'm sure the trouble lights would have come back on. They have not in two weeks. Oh yeah, befor you disconnect the battery, write down your pre-set radio stations as you will have to reprogram them. ------------ jeff at 12/6/2002 8:12:07 AM

I had similiar problems this morning with the VSC and engine light coming on. Tried the suggestion of removing the negetive connection on the battery, left it off for about 20 minutes, reconnected and the lights are off or the computer reset. Either way - Thanks ------------ lynn at 4/4/2004 8:31:55 AM

My 4 Runner (2001) with 80,000+ miles on it had the same problems this am with the check engine and both vsc lights. Disconnected the battery and immediately reconnected it...didn't even loose the correct time on the clock. Problem solved. Suspect some type of plot (I bought an 80,000 mi extended warranty that just expired Monday. ------------ Tom at 5/18/2004 1:32:25 PM

Just had the same problem on my 2001 4Runner with less than 30K miles. VSC lights and Check engine lights all came on. Dealer said it was the ORV hose; the hose that goes from the charcoal filter to the gas tank. Part cost to replace is $26 dollars. Hopefully this will fix my problem.
