Hello all. I recently purchased a 2003 4 Runner V6 and have noticed that there is a fluttering or ticking noise coming from the driver side of the engine (I believe this was mentioned in a previous post by another person as well). The Runner only has 1000 Km on it. Anyone know what this would be or anything? Im taking it back to the dealer on Monday and will post with results, but Im still curious if anyone else has experienced this.
Thanks in advance. |

I just purchased a 2003 Sport 4runner and noticed that noise at 100 miles. You hear it when it is sitting still or when accelerating. I took it to the dealer and he said it couls just be noise from the injectors. He said to watch it and if it gets worse bring it back. I thought maybe it was a bad tank of gas but I guess not.. If Toyota gets enough complaints they will do something.

Ok I took it into the Toyota dealership today and they advised that it doesnt sound as though its anything to worry about. He said that the Highlander has a similar sound to it and that its normal on the Highlander. He advised that it was probably the pistons. He is going to contact the Toyota Manufacturer directly and advise me if there have been any other reported similar complaints. I will update this post again once I hear back from the guy.

I have the same noise. Whether they think it is a "problem" or not. It is very annoying and unexceptable for a vehicle that cost in excess of $30k.

Yup, I couldn't agree more. I thought maybe I was just being a bit anal about it, but you are absolutely right. I drove a $200 K-Car that sounded quieter than this one....It's driving me kind of nuts...

| I have the same chirping noise in the engine area, started at 500 miles. Took it back to the Toyota dealer and they looked at it and said that this was the second v6 4runner they looked at with this problem. They told me that Toyota was looking into this problem and its a pulley or the belt that's making the noise. I will keep updating if I get any more info |

Taking mine back tomorrow to the dealer where they are going to listen again and call Toyota. There has to be a fix.. this is like listening to a moped when accelerating at 2,300 RPM or just sitting still. I am embarrased to drive my 2003 Toyota 4-runner becasue of engine noise.

I took the truck back today and had the service manager get involved. He had the tech call Toyota in CA and file a case. Turns out Toyota is in the process of redesigning a exhaust manifold that is thicker to keep the sound in. It will be ready in 4 - 5 months. They are also looking into the squeak that someone mentioed and focusing on the pulley but no fix for that either. Take this not to your dealer and make them file a case.
Hope this helps. !!

| Ok the dealer took my engine apart and said it was not the shims in the lifters. He now said that there is a bulletin that is not even printed yet advising that the fluttering / ticking noise is actually the exhaust manifold. He has ordered the part and will put it on when it arrives. I will advise then if that has finally fixed the problem.... |

Have your dealer call Toyota in CA and take them this thread. There is a known problem with the fluttering, and chirping noise. The flutter is from the exhaust manifold which is being re-designed and to be released in October. No timeframe on the chirping noise which is the pulley.

I just purchased a V6 4 Runner and noticed the same problem. At first I throught something was caught in the fan because the clicking gets louder and faster as you drive. It stops after about 10 minutes of driving, so it is best to leave the vehicle over night at the service department to help them diagnose the problem. I also was told it is the pulley. Bad news is that Toyota does not have a fix at this time. All dealerships received a technical bulletin about the problem. But they don't tell you about the problem when you're buying the vehicle. It's really embarrassing to drive a new vehicle that sounds like a wreck.

Carlos what you need to do is register with www.toyota.com. Click on OWNERS then click on FAQ’s then click on EMAIL TOYOTA.
You will need the VIN number off your 4 runner and the place you bought the truck etc. Plus tell them about your problem and what step you have done to try to fix the problem. When you do this you open up a case with Toyota so they know about your problem. The more that people complain the faster they fix the problem. I wouldn't mention this site to Toyota because they might not take you seriously. I think Toyota needs to redesign a new belt or pulley.

| Toyota just called me back and they want me to bring in the SUV tomorrow morning. They think they have a fix for the problem and the techs from Toyota will be there tomorrow and want to work on it. They said that they have applied this fix to a few vehicles in So. California and it has been working. It's something with shimming the belt so that it rides better in the pulley. They said that it is riding too close to the engine and they believe that it is what is causing the noise. |

Do you guys know where the noise is coming from? Try putting on some belt dressing on your belt and see if the noise goes away. You can pick belt dressing at any Auto store for about 3 bucks it comes in a spraying. Spray the belt while the 4runner is on but be careful. If the noise goes away most likely it’s the pulleys. What the Toyota techs did was SIMMED THE TENSION PULLEYs to bring them into alignment with the other pulleys. I know that some or all 2003 V6 4runners are having this problem. Have them call the Toyota techs because they are aware of this problem. I hope this helps you guys because this fixed the noise that I was having on my 4runners. Good luck and keep us updated on what happens.

Two distinct problems have somehow become one in this discussion.
1. Sqeeling belt noise - I had it happen twice about two months ago, first thing in the morning. Got under the hood and twisted and pulled on the belts and have not had the problem since - go figure?
2. The "fluttering noise" described by Steve is a ticking noise, like a bad lifter, especially noticable on the drivers side of the V6 engine. This can be heard on all V6 engines. All indications are that it is due to the thin walled exhaust manifolds, hence more sound 'leaks' out. Should not have any effect on the reliability of the engine, However it sounds bad. I wonder how I would explain it to a prospective buyer should I decide to sell it years down the road. (Although, at this point I can't imagine anything persuading me to sell this truck, I love it!)
Will be doing my second off-road adventure with it this week in the White Mountains of Arizona. (Gotta get out of the Phoenix heat - goin up to 9000 feet elevations)

1. Fluttering noise (a ticking noise, like a bad lifter).
My Toyota 4runner doesn’t have the fluttering noise you describe (a ticking noise, like a bad lifter). The Toyota V6 4runner that I have was made March 2003. Maybe they fixed the problem with the new production. Does the a ticking noise lessen when you use higher octane gas?
2. Squeaking belt noise
What Toyota techs did was SHIMMED THE TENSION PULLEYs to bring them into alignment with the other pulleys. From what I gather the TENSION PULLEYs are not into alignment with the other pulleys on some or all of the V6 engines.
Your adventure sounds like fun Dave. Did some off-road adventure my self not to long ago 7000 feet elevation.
Good Luck

My Flutter noise is noticeable around 35-55mph. The frequency of the flutter seems to change as your speed changes. As you get beyond 55mph, the wind noise drowns out the flutter. When the flutter is noticeable and you apply the brakes, it slows down in freq. It is a real pain, since Houston traffic is normally running around 45mph during peak traffic time.
I thought my rear window switch was broken. You could use the remote and the key but the rear window switch would not allow the window to work. Solution, unlock the child window lock. Why they have it on the same circuit is beyond me.
Have you tried driving your 4runner with all windows rolled up, except one of the back passenger windows. Roll one down and drive around 50mph. Kind of hard on the ears.

I too have the "noise". Doesn't seem to be the belts on this one. Sounds like a lifter or bad exhaust gasket. Doesn't seem to effect performance, but sounds horrible. Can't believe I didn't notice this during test drive. Has anyone been able to get a copy of the Toyota Bulletin?
I agree this this sounds like 2 distinct problems. I believe the engine has automatic tensioning for the belts, which worries me when I hear that they have been "shimmed" for alignment.

Yeah, that's the noise I'm talkin about. I have not seen any info on a TSB, everyone seems to think this is a normal part of the design of this engind, this discussion on the following board may shed some light...

I was wondering if the problem with the Fluttering Noise or ticking noise are coming from just the sports 4runners? I know that the SR5 and limited have the same V6 engine as the sport 4runner but different hoods right? I’m just puzzled because I’m not hearing the ticking noise on my SR5 4runner.
Are you using the Toyota filter when you change your oil Dave? I haven’t made up my mind on 5 w30 or 10 w30 oil. I live in California and we have warm weather out here. I know Toyota recommends using 5 w30 on the V6 2003 4runners. Toyota also recommended using 5 w30 on my 96 Camry and I used 10 w30 and the car runs like it’s new and it has 100,000 miles on it but I changed my oil @ 3000 and sometime 5000 miles and did all the tune-up when they were needed. Used Fram filter and sometimes Toyota Filter. I did use Slick 50 on the car twice, but I have read that it’s not that great.
Here a good link on oil.

What type of 4runner do you guys have SR5, SPORT or limited? Also are any of you guys using Synthetic Engine Oil in your 4runners. I ask because Im thinking of using Mobil 1 Synthetic Engine Oil when I do my second oil change.

The model shouldn't make a difference. The noise can be heard most prominently on the drivers side, pull next to a wall and see if you hear it. It's not a hideous sound, just a noticable ticking. My truck was built in November and it appears to have rolled steel headers, rather than cast. My guess is that they don't provide the sound deadening you would get from cast.
I always use Toyota filters, they are relatively inexpensive and I can rely on them being made well. As for oil, I live in Mesa, AZ (one of the hottest places on earth?!?) and I follow the manufacturers recommendation of 5w30. Again, use it in my Solara too. Synthetics are not prone to breaking down in heat, so I see no reason to use another weight.
We also have a 96 camry wagon with 117k on it. I use standard dino oil in it and have had no engine problems. I change it at 3000 mi. I change the synth in the other cars every 5000. I will never use "slick" anything oil additives. Too many of them cause problems. Nothing beats regular oil changes.

I pulled up to a wall & drove in my garage to see if I could hear the ticking sound you guys describe. No ticking or Fluttering Noise coming from my 4runner at this time. But who knows I might get that ticking noise later on. I will be using 5 w30 Synthetics oil on my next oil change. If Dave hasn’t had and problem using 5 w30 in Mesa, AZ “one of the hottest places on earth”, I know I wont have any problem using it here in California. I know how you guys feel because the belt problem I had was having was driving me nuts. Toyota kept their word and fixed my problem in a month, I’m sure they will fix that ticking noise when they re-designed exhaust manifold in October. Good Luck
Thanks again for all your input

I hear both. The tic-tic noise is faint and doesn't bother me. It is the flutter, I have to turn up the radio to drown it out or drive faster.
Again, to describe my flutter. Imagine a label or paper in the wind. That is what it sounds like. I tried to look for it but with no success. There is one item that I think it might be. Inside the right front tire well, behind the tire is a mud guard protecting the engine from splash ups. Comparing it to the left(drivers side), the left side sits concave and matches the contour of the well. The right side is somewhat loose and convex, or bulges into the well. I can see were the wind could be brushing by the plastic causing it to vibrate. I'll have to compare it to another.
Anyone wish to check their v6 sport and report back.
Regards,

This message is back out there for Jay, Dave, or anyone who has had the Tension Pulley shimmed.... Can you describe what/how the pulley was actually shimmed? I'm not dealing with the brightest techs and I want to ensure I get things done correctly.
I have the tapping noise, which I believe has to do with the exhaust manifold, but just started the belt squeal at morning start up. Clears up in a few minutes...for now.

What you need to do is talk to the Toyota service manager and have him call the Toyota Techs at Toyota Corp. What the Toyota techs did was SIMMED THE TENSION PULLEYs to bring them into alignment with the other pulleys. They said that they have applied this fix to a few vehicles in So. California also and it has been working. I wasn’t there to see what they did but it’s been over a month and I hear no squeaking from the belt any more.
I don’t have the ticking or Fluttering you guys describe. When did you buy your 4runner and when was made. Also is it a sport, SR5 or limited that you have.

Took mine to the stealer today to have both issues looked into.
The belt squeal now has an official Toyota TSB. The dealer had to order the parts which include a new v-belt, a tensioner assembly, a flange bolt, and a "noise kit". Once these parts come it I will take it back for the fix.
As for the "ticking" sound, they heard it but classified it as "normal". So I guess I won't worry about it.
I also had them order parts for another TSB, namely for the rear armrest cupholder which rattles in the down position. They have a "noise kit" for this too.

I have the same engine tapping from the left side of the block when car warms up and runs for the first 10-15 minutes. Sounds like bad valve lifter.
Taking my truck in tomorrow for the second time, first time they found nothing and no noise.

The parts came in so I took it for the fix today. Belt noise is completly gone!
I asked for a more detailed explanation of the ticking noise. They said it was normal due to the fact that this engine has solid lifters which are somewhat noisy. At least I got them to record this in their service record, which should cover me if something happens down the road.
I also had the TSB done on the rear cup holder, and it's somewhat laughable. The fix consists of putting some small pieces of open cell foam under the cup mechanism so that when it is in the closed position it does not rattle.

I had my belt redone in accordance with the TSB, but it was not making any noises. They tried to fix my ticking-rattling V6 4.0L motor by replacing the belt, I guess if Toyota pays for it, why not rip them off:) In any case, I have the mother of all "ticking" noises, it comes from the left bank and under the oil pan and it is loudly heard from 50 feet away any time, when engine is cold, or warm. Dealer tried checking valve clearances, exhaust leaks and found nothing, so they told me "it is normal, as long as my truck runs", sounds like something Mitsubishi would say to their customer:) I went one step up to the Toyota Corporate HQ and now they are investigating what was done by the dealer and what can be done to fix the situation, meanwhile my second CD-Radio failed providing me with tons of issues, so if they do not fix my truck I will have no choice but to return it.
DO NOT TAKE "THIS IS NORMAL TAPPING" BS FROM YOUR DEALER, SINCE WHEN RATTLING ENGINE WAS NORMAL??? We did not pay $30K+ to listen to this tapping on every traffic light. WE could buy Old Mazda MPV much cheaper to hear that. |

Dave, You wouldn't have the number of that TSB by any chance? I have a SR5 V6 which I got in Feb, and I have had it back to the dealer four times for this squeal. I have an extensive background in automotive repair, and am amazed at the lack of expertise these guys have. The first time I brought it in, I told them it sounded like a pulley/bearing for the belt, they couldn't hear anything. I waited a month, until the noise go so bad I thought a bearing was going to sieze any second. I sprayed each pulley with
WD-40 one at a time until I got to the tensioner assy. The noise immediately went away for a while, but came back later that day. When I brought it back to them, I gave them a diagram of the engine pointing out the pulley, but they insisted it was a bad belt, which they didn't stock. I waited two weeks for the belt to get in, and they changed it on 6/30/03. 25 days, and less than 400 miles later, the noise returned. I just dropped it off for them to look at again in the am. I will call them about the TSB in the morning, maybe they have seen it by now.
Thanks to all for your input, this looks like a good place for info mining.

| I don’t have the TBS number but what they replaced was the Drive Belt Tensioner Pulley, Bolt Flangeand and a new Belt Ribbed. What you need to do is talk to the Toyota service manager and have him call the Toyota Techs at Toyota Corp if he doesn’t know about the TBS for the squeal. Keep us updated

Thanks for the info again. I bought my Sport Edition in May (made in March).

HELP!!!!
