Dave, You wouldn't have the number of that TSB by any chance? I have a SR5 V6 which I got in Feb, and I have had it back to the dealer four times for this squeal. I have an extensive background in automotive repair, and am amazed at the lack of expertise these guys have. The first time I brought it in, I told them it sounded like a pulley/bearing for the belt, they couldn't hear anything. I waited a month, until the noise go so bad I thought a bearing was going to sieze any second. I sprayed each pulley with
WD-40 one at a time until I got to the tensioner assy. The noise immediately went away for a while, but came back later that day. When I brought it back to them, I gave them a diagram of the engine pointing out the pulley, but they insisted it was a bad belt, which they didn't stock. I waited two weeks for the belt to get in, and they changed it on 6/30/03. 25 days, and less than 400 miles later, the noise returned. I just dropped it off for them to look at again in the am. I will call them about the TSB in the morning, maybe they have seen it by now.
Thanks to all for your input, this looks like a good place for info mining.

Took mine to the stealer today to have both issues looked into.
The belt squeal now has an official Toyota TSB. The dealer had to order the parts which include a new v-belt, a tensioner assembly, a flange bolt, and a "noise kit". Once these parts come it I will take it back for the fix.
As for the "ticking" sound, they heard it but classified it as "normal". So I guess I won't worry about it.
I also had them order parts for another TSB, namely for the rear armrest cupholder which rattles in the down position. They have a "noise kit" for this too.

What you need to do is talk to the Toyota service manager and have him call the Toyota Techs at Toyota Corp. What the Toyota techs did was SIMMED THE TENSION PULLEYs to bring them into alignment with the other pulleys. They said that they have applied this fix to a few vehicles in So. California also and it has been working. I wasn’t there to see what they did but it’s been over a month and I hear no squeaking from the belt any more.
I don’t have the ticking or Fluttering you guys describe. When did you buy your 4runner and when was made. Also is it a sport, SR5 or limited that you have.

This message is back out there for Jay, Dave, or anyone who has had the Tension Pulley shimmed.... Can you describe what/how the pulley was actually shimmed? I'm not dealing with the brightest techs and I want to ensure I get things done correctly.
I have the tapping noise, which I believe has to do with the exhaust manifold, but just started the belt squeal at morning start up. Clears up in a few minutes...for now.
HELP!!!!

After seeing the info here, I called the dealer in the morning. When I told them about the TSB, the service rep acted like he hadn't heard of it but said
they were looking at the vehicle at that time and would call me back. About an hour later they called, said they were ordering a new tensioner and belt and they would take a week or so to arrive. When I picked it up, the service order listed the same four items that you got were on order. But there is no mention of the TSB #. By the way, according to my service order, the part # 16639-31010 is a spacer, idler pull.
Thanks again for the info and quick reply.

Gary put some belt dressing on the belt until your truck gets fixed. This will stop the squeal and works better then wd40. You can pick it up in any parts store. Also your dealer sucks because they should have called Toyota Corp when they couldn’t find a fix on the squeal.
Here is another really good link on Toyota runners.

I have a very loud "ticking" on my 2003 Highlander which appeared around 10000 miles, took it to dealer, called Toyota "800" number met with district service manager said it was "fuel injectors"- their going to replace them next week, can't guarantee it'll fix it! How many more excuses are there for the ticking?!?! Going to arbitration next if this doesn's work. I agree totally unacceptable for a $30K vehicle, also puts off a black soot from exhaust and oil residue from tailpipe...still think it's injectors? We'll see next week!

Rachael at 5/1/2003 11:51:46 AM
I have the same noise. Whether they think it is a "problem" or not. It is very annoying and unexceptable for a vehicle that cost in excess of $30k.
------------
Steve at 4/28/2003 12:36:36 PM
Ok I took it into the Toyota dealership today and they advised that it doesnt sound as though its anything to worry about. He said that the Highlander has a similar sound to it and that its normal on the Highlander. He advised that it was probably the pistons. He is going to contact the Toyota Manufacturer directly and advise me if there have been any other reported similar complaints. I will update this post again once I hear back from the guy.

Hello all. I recently purchased a 2003 4 Runner V6 and have noticed that there is a fluttering or ticking noise coming from the driver side of the engine (I believe this was mentioned in a previous post by another person as well). The Runner only has 1000 Km on it. Anyone know what this would be or anything? Im taking it back to the dealer on Monday and will post with results, but Im still curious if anyone else has experienced this.
Thanks in advance. |

I was wondering if the problem with the Fluttering Noise or ticking noise are coming from just the sports 4runners? I know that the SR5 and limited have the same V6 engine as the sport 4runner but different hoods right? I’m just puzzled because I’m not hearing the ticking noise on my SR5 4runner.
Are you using the Toyota filter when you change your oil Dave? I haven’t made up my mind on 5 w30 or 10 w30 oil. I live in California and we have warm weather out here. I know Toyota recommends using 5 w30 on the V6 2003 4runners. Toyota also recommended using 5 w30 on my 96 Camry and I used 10 w30 and the car runs like it’s new and it has 100,000 miles on it but I changed my oil @ 3000 and sometime 5000 miles and did all the tune-up when they were needed. Used Fram filter and sometimes Toyota Filter. I did use Slick 50 on the car twice, but I have read that it’s not that great.
Here a good link on oil.

I own a 03 V6 Sport 4x4
Did first oil change at 2500 with Mobil 1. Use it in my 2000 Solara and it performs well IMHO.

What type of 4runner do you guys have SR5, SPORT or limited? Also are any of you guys using Synthetic Engine Oil in your 4runners. I ask because Im thinking of using Mobil 1 Synthetic Engine Oil when I do my second oil change.
