I have a 2002 tacoma with 38,000 mi, the check engine light came on after the gas cap had not been tightened down... We had Toyota run a diagnostic and they found error codes that would indicate that the charcoal filter (filters the vapors from the gas tank) was faulty, also got a strong gas smell while on a short trip but never happened again. Now the light just went off? Is the charcoal filter malfunction a result of the gas cap being left off, did it reset itself? The part is $300 and I'd rather not replace it if I don't have to... Anyone have any info?

thanks

Check your warrenty info, that should be covered if it is indeed faulty? But Toyota will have to agree its faulty....

I think Emmisions stuff is covered beyond 36K?

Good Luck ------------ tony at 5/29/2003 10:40:10 AM

I believe if you read your owner's manual it tells you in there that the engine light will come on under certain circumstances, one of them being if the fuel cap is not properly on. I know mine says that for my 2001 Tacoma.

I just had the exact same thing happen to me....except with a 2003 Grand Cherokee...it smells of gas when i start up, and the engine light came on...and now the dealer wants 300 clams to replace the charcoal canister. I'm pretty certain it happened b/c the gas cap wasn't tightened down properly the last time I refueled.... ------------ dd at 8/15/2003 9:12:36 PM
