I have a 2000 4runner sr5. It seems like there is a little "bump" like someone bumped into me or the transmition is downshifting. It happens when I come to a stop, then let off brake. Any ideas?

I have an '03 SR5 V-6 Auto that does the same thing. I used to rebuild transmissions before I changed careers, and this 'bump' acts to me just like the transmission is not in low (1st) gear after stopping, and when starting off the transmission downshifts to 1st and this causes the 'bump'. Mine seems to do it mostly when I stop sharply, if I come to a normal (slow) stop it doesn't seem to happen. It, to me, is not a big deal at this time, and I am still under the warranty, so I am going to wait for a while to see if it changes any before complaining to the dealer.

Good luck... ------------ Jones at 7/21/2003 3:51:39 PM

I have a 2002 4 runner and it does the same thing. I used to think it was the brakes getting hot or something but it probably is the transmission. ------------ Jones at 7/21/2003 3:51:39 PM

I believe it is an inherent problem with the slip yoke connecting the driveshaft to the transfer case. Have the yoke filled with the proper lube the next time you get an oil change, etc... ------------ Sean at 8/1/2003 4:04:56 PM

I have exactly the same annoying problem with my $40K 2003 4Runner V8 Limited. Dealership service personnel plead ignorance when I ask them to fix the problem. ------------ Jones at 7/21/2003 3:51:39 PM

I had toyota lube the drive shaft slip joint and the problem seems to be gone. It still does it every now and then but very lightly. The book says to lube the drive shaft every 5k mi. I guess that's what I'll have to do to keep the problem from coming back. I wonder why real wheel drive cars don't have this problem? ------------ Jones at 7/21/2003 3:51:39 PM

The problem is back. Stopped for a couple of weeks but it's doing it again. Drives me up the wall. ------------ Jones at 9/2/2003 1:46:27 PM

I posted a question about this problem as I have it will "my new" 96 Limited 4Runner 4x4. Because of this site, Iwas aware that some had the problem. Mine did not for the first couple of weeks but it definitely does now. Do they all have this problem? ------------ Lee at 8/23/2003 5:48:25 PM

My local Toyota dealer has eliminated the "bumping" problem in my 2003 V8 4Runner, at least for the time being. My understanding is that the mechanic added grease to the slip-yoke via an external fitting. It was annoying that it took three visits to the dealer over an 8-month span to make this happen. I found some useful information about the problem on the web site www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/front_end/lube/. Scroll down the web site to the box "Do you have driveline clunk?" ------------ Bill Root at 10/15/2003 4:08:53 PM
