| I have compared the engine specs between the 03 and 04 V8 4Runners and they seem identical. Interstingly enough, the 03 rates the towing capacity at 5K while the 04s at 7K. Am I missing something or did they revise their towing assessments for the 4.7 engine? Will the 03 V8s towing rating be adjusted upward??

It seems that 03 V6 and V8 have the saem tow hitch, which is rated at 5k. On 04 model, V8 comes with a class IV hitch rated at 7K. The hitch looks like the same as the one on Tundra.

Actually, they were changed in April of 03... the later 03 V8 models (built after 4/15) have the weight distributing hitch and the higher towing capacity. I've got an 03 V8 with the higher capacity. Most of the other 04 changes were applied to the 03s built after 4/15 as well. The only real "new" features on the 04s from the late 03s is the tire pressure monitor and the third row seat. Everything else was on the late 03s

was curious about that - i bought my '03 4runner limited in oct '02 - easily towes my 4500lb boat/trailer and i know i could easily tow more, but all the documents i have show a 5k hitch rating. Not sure 'when' it was built (i.e. after 4/15?) how would i tell? And...the big question...if I have the 5k rated '03 model can I upgrade to the 7k rated '04 model?

| Just got an 03 SR5 V8 4runner (built in 02). Would like to tow over 5000# (fewer trips to the mountains to get firewood). Was there ever an answer to the question of whether the 03 can be upgraded to tow 7000#? I bought a new receiver from the dealer - it's different, but they couldn't tell me if it accounted for an extra 2000# towing. |
