I have had the BF Goodrich AT's on every truck I have owned for the last 20 years. I firmly believe that they are the best all-around handling tire on and off road. They are also one of the best looking tires around.
I went to 3 different major tire dealers before I found one who would install them on my truck. It seems that these guys look up your model and year truck on a computer and then it lists what tire the manufacturer recommends. I wanted the 265/70R/17 BF Goodrich AT tires installed on my 2003 4Runner but the computer data stated that this tire is defined as too big for the 2003, 2004 4Runner. Well they were WRONG.
I saw my first 4Runner with these size tires on it at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show, The Toyota exhibit had on display a "Global Extreme" model of the 2003 4Runner which was a truck that they drove around the world through the harshest's climates. When I saw this 4Runner with those tires, I knew they would fit mine also with NO modifications. I finally bribed a guy to install the BF Goodrich AT's 265/70R/17's on my truck. They never rub or bind or even bottom out. They are a perfect match. That is the biggest problem with Toyota, they sell you a $30,000.00 plus vehicle yet they put sub-standard tires on it. Well I wanted better tires so I went with the AT's. If Toyota didn't want you to have the larger tires on the 4Runner, then why did they put them on their Global Extremes 4runner that they drove around the world????? Why don't they list them as an option for this truck????? Maybe this is the real reason....
I read an online story in a forum that says that a rep from BF Goodrich was trying to get Toyota to put these tires on their trucks for the 2003 model year but during a presentation he accidently spilled a cup of coffee on the Japanese CEO. He was slightly burned by the hot coffee and the rest is history, they never got the tire deal (even though 4 months later, BF Goodrich signed a deal with Hummer to put the AT's on all of their vehicles leaving the factory).
I have picture available of my 4Runner with these tires, other upgrades I have done to my truck: I installed a factory bug shield, a chrome step bumper, and also installed lights inside the rear lower reflector lens, this really adds to the appearance of my 4Runner, there was an opening already behind the reflector lens, all I had to do was install a bulb assembly and wire it in, I have pictures of all of these upgrades if you are interested, please email me at: ONEOK@aol.com
Send me some pictures of your truck, I'd love to see them.
Keep in touch.

| Some aftermarket tire dealers only can go by whats listed on their computer to fit your truck, put a lift on a new truck and see how hard of a time you have getting it aligned. You have to find a true alignment shop that can go outside the bounds of the OEM setup and still set it right. Its the same with the tire dealers if they mount a tire and it doesnt fit the bought the tire same if you drive off and come back saying it rubs some just dont want to take the chance. |
