| I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has bought a Toyota 4 runner in regards to what model and options they would recommend based on their experience. Thanks in advance! |

I bought a 2000 sr5 it has air,cd,amfm, moon roof, roof rack v6,tow package, running boards, spoiler and it runs great, I have owned toyotas for years and there is no comparision to fit finish and quality I had a 95 avalon never need anything but one tune up and I changed the oil myself every 3000 never a rattle or problem, I love america but our cars are made like they come from a 3rd world country. I bought a merc sable and by 50,000 miles it need a new trans and cv boots, front struts and more. I stopped buying American in 1991 the end, it is toyota from now on, the truck is black it will go over 100,000 with one hand tied behind its back, its tits to look at too. joe

Get the 2WD SR5 model with the Sport Package. I believe thiss is the best deal you can get. It has the same engine, tires, and all the other extras that goes with it. You can only get the Sport Package in Black, Green or Millenium Silver. I love the scoop that goes with the sport package it looks better than most Limited 4wd. Unless you go 4 wheeling and want the leather and upgraded sound system but you have to pay 35-37K. I don't know too many people that go 4 wheeling in such a nice truck. I got mine for $26,600+ tax.

We have a 97 runner with the basic package. However, if you can avoid the ABS I would not get that. We like our Runner in most respects. Large enough for a family of five, handles well in deep snow (we had a 3' dump the same year we bought it),
and in general drives well. The ABS is a pain. It comes on even on slightly bumpy pavement increasing the braking distance as much as a foot or two. Usually right at a stop light (where the pavement patches usually are). I have been trying to remove the
fuse (hence my post earlier) and got fed up. I ripped it out literally. It brakes much better without ABS. It only skids if I slam the brakes on very hard from a 35+mph to zero stop. When I did the same with the ABS I travelled an extra 6-7 feet, which was more than I would skid.
Our dissatisfaction with the ABS peaked about a year and a half ago when we had an accident. You can read more about it here : http://www.geocities.com/mstoer2001/index.html
Anyhow, my wife is only 5' 2" and can get in without the running boards and we use our Thule roof rack when needed. Just this year we added a DrawTite hitch for a 4x8 SnowBear utility trailer. Pulls it like a dream (and still brakes fine!).
