| The rear window on my 91 4Runner is not working- the window is in the up position. The key switch on the tailgate does nothing and when using the switch inside the car I can hear a click but the window will not go down. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks. |

I would pull the rear panel off and give the window motor a nice thump with a hammer. Sometimes if a window isnt used or used very little, the motor will stick. If that doesnt fix it, check the wiring (plug) with a simple multimeter. make sure its getting power for the up/down action. if it is, maybe the motor or a relay went out? check the chiltons manual on that or contact your local TOY dealer (parts/service dept). Good luck

Had the same problem as you back in Sept 2001. Dealer had to replace and recode the lock cylinder. Cost me about $250 Cdn. including labor. If you want to save some money and do it yourself, the list price of the cylinder and key is $85.10 and to recode the cylinder so that it matches your existing key is $23.00. Hope this helps.

Alex,
My '92 4Runner is in the shop now because of the same problem. Apparently there is a major relay that controls the rear window, rear wiper and rear lock that has gone bad on mine. After my mechanic diagnosed the problem and quoted me a repair price, I phoned several other reputable repair places as well as my local Toy dealer. All concurred that it is unfortunately common for this to go bad. 2 more bits of bad news. The relay is $279US and from what I'm told it's a major pain to get to and install. One shop said they were not interested in doing the repair because it's such a pain. Toyota and another were quoting over $200US for labor to install.
Hope your problem isn't the same.

I am having the same problem. I took it in to an auto glass place and they said that it had a "flat spot" and the inside was all rusted and I should get a new tailgate. they said that they couldn't even get the window down to work on it and were afraid that they would get it down and not get it back up. He said this was common. Has anyone ever heard of this. I am going to take it somewhere else for a second opinion. there is some surface rust on the tailgate and I thought about fixing it, so I am also looking into getting another tailgate.

First of all, check if the rear window wiper is in its position. I have a 1994 runner and in wintertime, lives in´the north of Sweden,it´s allways some trubbels with the rear window.

had the same problem on my 88' 4runner. However, in my case, the window was stuck in the up position so every two days my battery would be completely drained. When I took it to an electrical shop they told me it was the relay switch and it had to be replaced. The price from the dealership was about $287 US. It works fine now and I have had no other problems so far.

| I have a 90 runner with similer problems. I know it is the relay which is very easy to get at.It is in the rear drivers side wall.Just remove the inside paneling and you will see the relay box(5" x 3" x 1") Then call every wrecker you can to get one for cheaper than the dealer.Make sure you ask about there return policy incase its a dud too. Also if they have some sort of a warranty as this is a common problem. OR try this for a CHEAPER alternative.I hate typing so here is a site to check out for info.

I too have a stuck rear window in the up position. I have a 94 ,i have started with the fuse and it is good, next i went to the center console switch and found that it is good in the up position and bad in the down. my question is, if the switch is showing electrically bad, why does this bypass the key working on the tailgate. Any suggestions or is this the problem. i am planning to find someone that has this vehicle and remove their switch and try it. what do you all think.

| I have had the same problem, both in a 1990 and 1991. My first thought was the motor was bad and replaced that, but it wasn't the motor. My solution to the problem was at first I unplug the connector and reversed the motor and I could then get the window to go up and down by just reversing the wires. But this was a hassle to have to crawl over the back seat each time I wanted to use the rear window. What I ended up with was getting a three way toggle switch and mounting it under the rear bumper. Now if you are like me I couldn't afford a new relay and this 4.00 switch works just fine. The down side to this is that you can only open it from the back of the vehicle. Which is better then not getting to use it at all. Dennis |
