Hi Pat - this is a great question to ask. Most people will initially dump a bunch of money into stock axles with gears, lockers, etc. and then realize that if they've added tires that are too large, that the stock axles won't take the stress.
That said, here are some questions I have:
1) What size tire do you plan on running?
2) What type of wheeling will you be doing?
3) How often will you be wheeling?
4) How much of a daily drive will this be?
5) Do you have a tight budget?
If you can give us a bit of information like that, we can give you better direction on what you should do.

Hey Pat - your stock Toyota axles really won't hold up to 38's (that's a lot of rubber and weight). I ran 35's for a few years, but it was always a nail-biter.
Given that you're going to do some rock crawling, you're really going to be better off upgrading to different axles. The good news is that a Ford 9" will darn near bolt into the rear of your truck with just a few mods.
Given that you're also a solid front axle, converting to a D44 or something like that, the swap will be relatively easy up front too.
I think if you start wheelin with 38's, you'll find yourself replacing axle shafts on a regular basis. At least that's my humble opinion.

| find one out of a jeep wagoneer mid 80s. i think that they had a right side drop on the transfercase. which is the same as yours. the other thing is that the axle has been narrowed that way it will fit on your truck without to much rubber hanging over. i you wat full width axles you need to look in getting a dana 44 axle out of a chevy half or 3/4 ton truck. |

The Wagoneer axle is full-width too, I had mine cut down a bit to match my rear Ford 9" width.

Hi Pat - you'll never regret going with the Dana 60's, unless you're running small enough tires that the center portion of the differential drags on the rocks (the only drawback to an otherwise perfect axle).
$400 for a set of Dana 44's is a pretty sweet deal. Ask the guy if he can remove the diff covers for you though, just to make sure all the pieces-parts are inside, and that nothing is hosed.
Either way, you won't be sorry... the 44 or the 60 are both excellent axles.

| Hey I noticed this thread has been around a while but 30 spline longs up front will be WAY stronger than a Dana 44 http://longfieldsuperaxles.com/
Dana 60's are great but you can buy longs at about half the price of a doner 60, add gears and a locker and be ready to roll. Toy rear axles hold up really well too. I didn't catch what year your rig is but if it's pre 86 you can upgrade to a 86-95.5 rear axle assy for about $150 from the junkyard and the pre 86 and V6 third members should drop right in. Their are some rare thirds that wont fit so be sure to check it out. The later model axle assy is 3" wider (more frame clearance) and you can get aftermarket axles for it like the ones from Trail gear or Poly Performance. I'm running the ones from Poly http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/product.php?productid=777&cat=149&page=1
I have beat the tar out of mine with no problems on 37's.

Rick
Actually it is narrower than the ones they used in full sized P/U and Cherokee Chiefs. |

AZYOTA - you're right. I completely spaced-out and forgot about the Longfields. That is a super-stout conversion. I haven't run Yota axles in so long (7 years) that I forgot about them.
SnoMan - Yup, you're right. I think the Cherokee Chief is only about 1.5" longer, right?

Rick
Not sure on length (I am thinking 2 to 3 inches) but it is the same long axle on all Cherokee Chiefs and full sized pickup. The Wagoneer and non chief full sized Cherokee used a narrower axle. |

Yeah Rick, Toy stuff has changed a lot in the past few years. Bobby's axles have changed things a lot. Not only can you run 38's, you can beat on them. The next weak link is the hubs. If you swap out the hub studs to ARP studs, and then use Bobby Longs hub gears you will have a really stout front axle assy. At that point I would recommend running 5.29:1 axle gears and let the R&P be the weak link. If your running a double T-case set up, you could run stock 4.10's for a really beefy R&P, but then the weak link is the T-case output shaft. I would rather swap out an R&P than have to pull the T-case to swap out an output shaft. |
