| When I engege my 4x4, the light shows the 4x4 is engaged , but it's not. It's a push button 4x4. everything works up to the actuator, but the actuator won't engage. have changed it out twice, and the actuator is not the problem. on the wiring harness, it has 3 leads coming in. Are there supposed to be 2 grounds and one live lead? And where do they go? Thanks. |

It sounds like you might have a faulty encoder, as the 233 transmission is controlled by a computer like that on your engine. You can use a jumper wire fromterminals J and A on the ALDL under the driver's side dash. There's only 4 codes that you can see, and you can read it directly from the "4wd light".
Code 1 = normal
Code 2 = encoder fault
Code 3 = TCCM motor circuit
Code 4 =RAM/ROM failure
HOWEVER, you abslutely must clear the codes, or you might get a false positive reading. Here's how:
To clear the codes, ignition off, pull the 5 amp TCCM fuse, wait at least 2.5 minutes, replace the fuse, then cycle the ignition key on/off 5 times.
If you get a "code 2", here's what the service manual says to do (there should be 4 wires to test on the TCase):
---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Disconnect transfer case electrical connector
- Ignition in run
- Measure voltage at pins 1(yel/blk), 2(dk blu/wht), 4(brn/wht), and 8(red/wht) - harness side
- DVOM should read 5 volts (DC) at pins 1,2,4, and 8 - Does it?
- No--->Check for open or short to ground in circuits with 0 (zero) volts and repair, if circuits are ok, replace TCCM
- yes--->Measure resistance between transfer case (harness side) pin 3 and a good ground, should be less than 2 ohms. Is it?
- No--->repair circuit #1554 (blk/wht)
- Yes--->replace encoder motor
-----------------------------------------------------------------
HOWEVER, I've also heard that there are problems with faulty nuetral-safety switches as well. Apparently the same ground that feeds the encoder / actuator runs through the neutral-safety switch and this can fix the problem as well.
While I'm certainly a Chevy fan, this is one area that they consistenly fall short in.
Let me know if this works or not.
