| Just bought an 02 Silverado Z-71. Mileage has been between 8-9 mpg. Took it to dealer and they said it has to break in? 1230 miles...Help...Thanks |

8-9 mpg?!?!?! that is not good at all... what engine do u have.... i have an 02 avalanche Z71 (heavier than silverado) which has the 5.3 liter engine and during break in, it got between 12 and 15 and i am rough on my engines.... im sure u probably have the same engine... unless u drive worse then me (not possible)... plus ur break in should be up... good luck with it....just doesnt sound right to me either....

My 02 1500HD silvy crew cab 4x Z85 gets 8 mpg city only, 10 city/hwy & 15 hwy only. Has -700 miles now. I'm not hard on it, however off-road is slow in one foot of snow & pulling other guys out (counts into above mileage). I'll try to remeber to let you know when things get better. |

Last November I had the chance to speak with one of the engineers from GM. He was responsible for many of the Cadillac and GM drive train that you see on your vehicles today. He told me something that blew my mind a little. He said sometimes when an engine isn't running right you just have to let into it with all you got. Floor it off the light a few times every now and than. Make the engine work. He says this actually will lengthan engine life and cause less problems. He said many problems with engines, ecspecially larger engine's is that people never use them for what they are truely meant for.
I don't know if it's true or not but it's couldn't hurt to try. |

Usually during a breakin, you're not supposed to go faster than 55mph(according to manual), peel out, gun it, tow, or haul anything yet. A little Agressiveness on the engine may help. |

sounds like a load of crap to me. i have an 2002 2500HD 4X4 with 6.0L and i am getting at last check 13 mpg. and that is with 3500 miles on it. i have been getting at least 12mpg since i bought it.
