I have a 2002 Chevrolet 2500HD 4X4 and I would like to make it ride softer and smoother. I bought it for the size and looks, but will not be using the Heavy Duty attributes of it. Is there any way to make it ride more comfortably. Would changing the shocks or springs help. I have heard they ride better after they are lifted. Is this true?

Lower your tires air pressure, the high mfg recommendations are there as a precaution for towing heavy loads. Try going with 45-50lbs all around and the trucks ride will smooth out. Just remember to air them back up when pulling a load.

I hae a ext cab 2wd long bed and have the same problem. The stock shocks are weak and I have been told that bigger tires and shocks would help. Let me know if you find a solution. ------------ Travis Hawkins at 2/1/2002 12:32:24 PM

I dunno if i would run my tires that low on the highway...i run my 33" BFG ko's at 65 psi. I travel about 500 miles a weekend on these street tires...and run them at 90+ mph for atleast 3 hrs continuos and they run cold and smooth...

------------ Travis, the HD models are what most people would consider, work trucks. Depending on the lif you choose, the ride will still be rough or even rougher. You can probably try find some of those Edelbrock IAS shocks but I'm not sure if the're available for HDs or if they will make much of a difference. Lowering your tire pressure is risky. You may wear out your tires faster possibly increase the chance of a blowout depending on the amount of air pressure.

Sometimes i want to pull out all my hair and run around screaming at idiots like you. Why did you buy the truck? 2500HD HEAVY DUTY (clue) when you bought it did you test drive it? why don't you sell it and buy a cadillac. you probably used to drive a car and never owned a truck before. also the HD have the better of all the chevy shocks offered even the crappy Z71.

The easiest way to make the heavy duties ride better is to put some weight in the back. 300-400 pounds will smooth it out incredibly. Just beware that your performance all around will suffer slightly, including of course, MPG.

You, sir, are an idiot. So you are surprised that a heavy duty truck rides rough. GUESS WHAT? IT'S A TRUCK!!!!!!!! If you want a soft and smooth ride, buy a Cadillac. ------------ Travis Hawkins at 2/1/2002 12:32:24 PM

they will not ride better when they are lifted ,cause you utilize the original springs so there is no change. you can get softer riding springs custom made, but only for the rear. ------------ Travis Hawkins at 2/1/2002 12:32:24 PM

It is a HD 3/4 ton truck. Buy a half ton or put 1500-2000 pounds in the bed! ------------ dan at 2/15/2002 10:04:56 PM

so you want your hd to ride better but you only bought it for looks. well then to start you need a custom bumper with a skid plate and about 7 off road lights (to put more weight on the front) and then oh say an 18" lift and 44" boggers, run them about 12 psi and do 100mph down the freeway, your ride will be wild and the rest of us will have some peace!!! or just go crawl in a hole some where and leave us alone. ------------ pat at 3/27/2002 6:33:09 PM

i don't mean to insult you like everybody else, but an HD isn't gonna ride like a cadillac. i think i would run lower pressure, it's not really all that risky. those tires are rated at 80 psi, run em down to 45 or 50, thats still plenty of psi unless you are towing/hauling. in my personal opinion the HD's ride pretty good compared to trucks before. go ride in an 88 and you'll see how good your HD actually does ride for a 3/4 truck.

I have a n 02 GMC 2500 HD with the 8.1L. When it was stock it was really stiff. I put on an 8" Fabtech lift with dual remote resivoir shocks, 37" SSRs, and now it rides really smooth. It eats up every thing.

My advice... Buy some bad ass shocks it helps!

Plus, for you chumps talkin sh * t about buying an HD and not using it as a work truck. Piss off! The HD is the perfect canidate for a lift with the bad ass features it comes with like a bad ass 14 bolt rearend with an 11.5" ring gear and full floating axles, a bad ass motor, and an Allison Trans!

The only thing I haul with mine is fine ass *****!

One ton running gear is what every Chevy dude (and others too) dream about having under their half ton. And that is only because they never really made a one ton short bed. So I tend to have to agree with you Unruly 1 about wheelin a one ton. Plus, not only do you get reliablity.... if you ever DID want to tow something ie:boat or trailer of some kind.... you got the equipment to do it with. Everyone should own a one ton, I own two...and dont haul a damned thing (yet, lol).

i have a 06 dmax. i went w/ simple leveling kit w/ bilistein (sp) shocks. it rides great.

also keep in mind if you have any deep lug tires the ride is not gonna be that great. stick w/ a good a/t tire or a street tire. the ride will be great.

With a extra 400 or 500 lbs up front from Dmax it should not ride too bad at times. You should ride in my gas one ton with factory HD front suspension. It is a nut buster except when plow is one it. (even then it is a bit stiff, it sinks 1/2 to 3/4 of a inch with big Fisher plow hanging off it.)

Hey Primetime - Who's levelling kit did you use?

My '06 could stand to soften up a bit too... rough roads here in Dallas (that rolling concrete crap that they use) is pretty rough.
