| I've noticed that my 2002 is showing black soot on the right rear side of the bumper. Does this mean it's starting to use oil as I've now got 12,900 miles, mostly all highway miles, traveling during break-in milage at approximately 75-85 miles per hour. Also, I've been having some transmission problems - when stopping, transmission doesn't down-shift completely to first gear, then sometimes it slips when taking off from a dead stop - a big "clanking" noise when shifting from second to first gear when slowing, etc.. I've got the 4L60E Transmission and the 5.3 litr motor. |

This sounds like the same stuff my Avalanche was re-purchased under the LEMON LAW for. I was paid $35,418.32 by GM for the Avalanche I bought at Team Chevrolet in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Smoke, oil consumption and transmission slippage was the cause for the Lemon Law case. Hope you bought yours new and didn't get stuck with my old one. The VIN # for my old lemon is 3GNEK13T52G115601. It was shipped immediately after the Lemon Law buy-back. This is due to the fact that it would have to be identified as a lemon to the next buyer if it stayed in Colorado. Buyers Beware!

Travis, don't listen to Johnny's comments. If it is the lemon get rid of it. Never listen to Johnny! |

According to a website I was on, Johnny's Avalanche has no Lemon record! |

I ran a Carfax on the VIN # you provided and it DOES NOT show anything about it being a LEMON. What's up? Overall the report showed the vehicle to have a clean history. Also, the information you posted on this thread and the other are inconsistent with each other. Hmm! I wonder why...?

I THINK the suggested break in speed is 65 mph or less for the first 1000 miles. After that, it's good to go. However, certain new cars don't need a break in period because they've ran and tested the vehicle before leaving the plant. My wife's Volvo S60 for example didn't need a break in period. You broke yours in between 75-85 mph, that might be a bit too fast, but I don't think that was the problem. Can't help you with the black soot.
As for your tansmission, first check the transmission oil, if its low, fill it up. If it's dirty, drain and replace it. If it looks clean, and it continues to give you trouble, also drain and replace it. It MIGHT be contaminated with something other than dirt that's not visible (maybe water?). If the transmission oil didn't fix the problem, then it might be something more serious, like your torque converter or perhaps the throw out bearing. These are speculations, don't freak out, get a professional, perhaps other than a dealer to look at it. Good luck.

| first off, don't listen to jonny. he doesn't know what he's talking about. if the exhaust pipe is next to the bumper than the soot is normal. exhaust isn't very clean stuff. unless it's smoking blue you aren't burning oil. i'd say make sure the fluid is up in your trans. you may also think about getting it flushed, it's recommended every 30,000 for that truck. |

I had this problem. took it to the dealer and they fixed it. It was a problem with the manifold gasket intake. chevrolet gave me a 100k mile warranty on motor. I am happy with the results.
