The 97 tahoe came in two different models, the LT and the LS. I have the LT which is the 4x4 model. The LS was the sport model. The LS came with factory fog lights and a switch mounted on the dash just to the right of the steering wheel. In my truck, an LT, there is no switch. There are however what looks like punchouts to put a switch just to the right of the steering wheel and above my 4x4 switches. I was able to find 2 of these switches and I was wanting to mount them in the dash like they are suppose to be done. I have several offroad lights and need 2 switches since they are only 30 amps. Does anyone know how to remove those punchouts without destroying the dash? I just need to remove the punchout so I can put the switches in there, once I get this done I can start on the dual battery setup yall helped me with. I will put a picture of the dash up as soon as I can.
Thanks! |

Yup... the best way is to use an Xacto knife and carefully scribe the area several times, then knock it out with your knuckle. Also, be sure to run those lights through a relay, not just your switch. Even though they may be rated to 30 amps (which seems awfully high for a switch), let the relay take the load (volts and amps), not the switch. Hope that helps. Rick |

Ok, so where would you suggest I get a good relay? I have 4 55 watt lights on the top of my truck, 2 55 watt lights on the brush guard. I am going to use 10 GA wire with a 30 amp fuse. The switches I have ordered are labeled as 30 amps, which is surprising like you said, but great! I have never installed a relay before, how is it done? |

Hey Lund - you can get a 12V relay at any automotive parts store (Pep Boys, AutoZone, Checker, etc.). They're usualy just a few dollars each.
The wiring diagrams come with the relays, but I found one on www.offroaders.com and have uploaded the picture. You can see their high-resolution picture at: http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/reading/relay-diagram.gif.
I would recommend that you run one relay per 2 lights. You CAN run one switch, into multiple relays too, but I wouldn't do more than 4 lights / 2 relays per switch (as a general rule of thumb).
Overall, relays are VERY easy to do, it just takes a bit of time (approx 15 minutes per relay) to mount and wire them in.
