A friend of mine says he can lift my Tahoe a couple inches by tightening (or loosening i forgot). He says we could fit 33's by simply doing this. Is this a safe thing to do or is he a complete moron. He has been lifting Trucks and SUV's for a year but im still not sure. Anyone with experience have any thoughts on this?

I heard cranking up your torsion bars for a lift is not the proper way to do it. You need an actual lift kit. |

You can do this, just be careful not to over do it. Tightening the torsion bars will raise your front end, but it puts your front tires at an angle (like this \/) depending on how much you tighten. Some say to tighten it only by half (for example: if you can tighten the torsion bars and raise your truck 3" higher, then lower it to about 1-1/2"). This angle can cause your cv boot and tires to wear out sooner, even though some people may disagree. Your ride will also be rougher also. You will also need to add blocks in the rear to level the truck. I'm not sure what size tire you can fit with this though. And don't forget to get an alignment after you mess around with the torsion bars (very important). If you just want to fit larger tires, it's probably ok. But if you plan to use it for offroad, a suspension lift kit is the best way to go. If you're short on cash, get a body lift it's sometimes 1/4 the price of a suspension lift and can raise your truck 3". But I also don't recommend a body lift if you plan on going offroad. Good luck!

Mike,
Are you going to put actual 33s under it or 285s. I am running 285s without any adjustments or lifts at all. The 285/75-16 are about the equivelant in height to 33s, however they are not quite as wide as the 33/12.5. The 33x12.5 might rub, but I do not have any problems with the 285 75s.
