Dear Group,

I have a 1995 Suburban with the 350 engine at approx. 225,000. Considering a rebiuld on the engine and tranny. Can I realistically get upwards of 350 -400 HP out of that engine? If so what changes would be required? Any recommended additional changes to the tranny to compensate for the additional HP/torque on vehicle running 35" tires?

Thanking You In Advance, Glenn

Dear Dan,

I planned on spending around $7,000.00 with some extra room for quality mods.

It is used as my daily driver after work, frequent short sporting hauls to the lake or through the bush and for loaded hauls on trips (5,000 round trip). 4X4 use through trails, bush and sees a good amount of snow use.

Appreciate the interest. Looking forward to your response, Glenn

glenn,

I checked an article about hp in an 1995 Suburban. They came stock with 200hp and after an engine rebuild you should expect to regain back to 200hp. If you want to get your hp up to 350-400 you'll probably have to spend close to that 7,000 dollars. Maybe even buying a supercharger, but i recommend doing the less expensive stuff first like k&n air intake, mass air flow sensor, headers, exhaust, a chip, throttle body spacer, and a lil bit more expensive Aluminum heads.

As for the tranny, i'm assuming it's an auto 4-speed, just rebuild it, I don't know if you would need to upgrade it that much, possibly upgrading the rear-end too.

Here's some website's you can check out. Suburban Review http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/Used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2127/act/usedcarreviewshowall?print=yes

For some of the performance mods above go to www.stylinconcepts.com

hope this helps

If it's not GM, I don't want it.

if you are willing to dump some money which sounds like you are you need to pull the motor abnd have it bored out. i just recently finished a project of mine which was a 350 that is making a nice amount of power. i would suggest that you put new pistons. and i you are really going to beat on it go with new rods to. have the crank shaft ground at 10 under. compisate this with new main bearings. then move on to the cam. you can find cams that will add alot of horespower but they will call for high rpms. so if i were you i would call compcams and see what they can't make you for your application. then i would go to the heads and have them machined. now here comes the scary part that most peopl wont do there selves but it is really not that hard port and polish the heads. i am 16 and have done port and polishing and it is not that hard aslong as you stay away from the valve seat you will be ok. you can also do this to the intake. it adds some power. then you can take the heads back to the kachine shop and have them assemble them and do a compitition valve job. all of these changes and some little things like gm freak listed will easily make your hp goals. for the 35 inch tires all you really need is a gear swap.

A much better solution is to rebuild it reasonable stock and supercharge it. For about $4000 (give or take depending on type/brand) you can easily make 350hp or so with out going over 6PSI boost or so and get a torque curve flat as a door nail from about 1500RPM to 4500 RPM and get well over 400ftlbs of it too from a engine with a smooth idle that sounds stock otherwise too. ALso Eldebrock makes a after market replacement intake manifold for it that I would use as well with ot without super charging as the stock one does not flow well at all on a TBI engine. If you get boost to around 8PSI or so and use a intercooler too, well over 400hp is with more than 500ftlbs of torque. YOu will also make the HP by about 5000rpm or less with goobs of low end torque vs an built up cammed up engine that the HP peak is at a lot higher RPM and that also lack low end torque too. THe only real draw back here is that premium is a must have with a supercharger but it is a small price to pay for the power gain.

well just did this rebuild on my 79 350 4bolt.roughly 370-400 horse power. cost me like 2500.00 buck's on this older block. but!! If your wanting to spend that much.go with edelbroke rpm alum..head's 64 cc or smaller chamber head's(dart 2's)are good cast head's. with a true flattop piston(hyperstatic)compresstion 10.5to1,stage 2 pink connecting rod's,with a 750 holly.cam kit 490-502 lift/duration 270-276 with a 110 or 111 lobe separation cam shaft from comp cam. with stock or stall torqe converter (stall)recommended.1000rmpover stock. rpm range on cam 1800-5800.

as for the fuel/intake setup I'm running a carb so keep that in mind. as for the tbi system check out jeg's or summit for a fuel system up grade foryour fuel system. sorry i couldn't help with that.I will check it out with my freind's at my local hp shop.

here's aweb forum. http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2460.html

sound's like they are swapping in a 454 tb in to a 350 cu.

sound's like the super charger would be your best bet.less hassel! let us know what you come up with.

a tpi set up would be a better up grade if you want to reach more power from the rebuild 400 hp.they sell a complete tpi kit for around 2500.00 buck's+2500.buck's for rebuild.not sure what year the kit go's up to??? check them out.
