| I have a 01 z71 with 37,500 miles, bought with 18k on it.. it has a distinct pop sound and steering wheel seems to jump slightly in the steering wheel/column when turning. i have had it at dealers 4 times for this complaint. they have put 2 steering shafts in it. the last time they told me they tightened 2 bolts in column. I still have the sound and feel whether turning while rolling or turning while sitting still. any ideas. this really is starting to irritate me. i am about ready to contact GM. other than this, seems to be great truck. |

I have the same problem but have not taken it to the dealer yet. It just started doing it not too long ago and it has become a real pain. My dad has a 99 and it did the same thing until he got rid of it. If you find anything out...let me know!

will do. i am at home for a couple of weeks in a row. so iam taking it back to the dealer (again). i may take them the info i have found on this site, or i may save it for GM. If i hadn't invested so much in acc. like toolbox, step rails bedliner etc. i would sell it outright and start over

got truck back from dealer's Friday afternoon, did not get off of the lot before 3 "pops", all 3 turns out of the lot. needless to say i called them back and it is back today at the dealer, i don't think the problem is the same as has been described here but in the knuckle where the tilt is adjusted or in the steering wheel splines, asked them to check this today. will let you know what happens.

Clunking Noise Under Hood and can be felt in the Steering Wheel
(Lubricate Intermediate Steering Shaft Assembly)

2000-2002 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Utility Models
(Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL) With Recirculating Ball-Type Steering
This bulletin is being revised to add model years and include a new service procedure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 00-02-35-003 (Section 02 - Steering).
Condition
Some customers may comment on a clunk type noise coming from under the hood that also can be felt in the steering wheel. These conditions may be more noticeable when turning at low speeds on rough road surfaces.
Correction
Important: DO NOT REPLACE THE FOLLOWING INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT P/Ns
^ 26085548
^ 26049343
^ 26083324
^ 26088325
Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle and lubricate the intermediate shaft with a Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Lubrication Kit, P/N 26098419.
Follow the service procedure below.
1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Set the steering wheel in the LOCK position.
3. From inside the vehicle, remove the upper bolt from the upper intermediate steering shaft (1) to the steering column connection.
4. From under the hood, remove the lower bolt that connects the upper intermediate shaft to the steering gear coupling shaft.
5. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft assembly.
^ From inside the vehicle, slide the shaft down and off the steering column shaft.
^ From under the hood, slide the shaft towards the dash in order to disengage the shaft from the steering gear coupling shaft.
^ From inside the vehicle, slide the upper intermediate shaft through the dash boot seal and remove the shaft from the vehicle.
6. Remove the spacer clip from the end of the intermediate shaft with a pair of needle nose pliers.
7. Fully extend the shaft by pulling the two shafts apart.
8. Apply the syringe of grease supplied in the Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Lubrication kit, P/N 26098419, into the open end of the shaft. Direct the syringe tip as deep as possible into the shaft and dispense the full content of the syringe.
9. Insert the plug supplied in the Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Lubrication kit into the open end of the shaft and finger tighten the wing nut.
10. Place the plugged end of the shaft on a hard surface and apply pressure to collapse the shaft and dissipate the grease through the shaft.
11. Remove the plug from the shaft and fully extend the shaft.
12. Inspect the shaft for a minimum of 13 mm (1/2 in) of grease on the shaft splines.
13. Repeat steps 10-12 if less than 13 mm (1/2 in) of grease is on shaft splines.
14. Clean the excess grease off of the shaft splines and around the shaft opening.
15. Carefully spread apart the spacer clip with a pair of pliers.
16. Reinstall the spacer clip into the open end of the shaft.
17. Align the spacer clip with the stakes in the shaft.
18. Reinstall the upper intermediate steering shaft through the dash boot seal and slide the lower end into the steering gear coupling shaft.
19. Raise the upper end of the intermediate steering shaft and install into the steering column shaft.
20. Install the upper bolt and nut.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 Nm (35 lb ft).
21. Install the lower bolt and nut.

I had the same problem but i fixed it by greasing all the steering grease fittings. There are some that are hard to find and are hard to get to. I think one was on top of the steering. Look hard and grease all of them and the popping will stop. Good luck
