| Hello from the Garden State! I Just Got a 92 Jimmy 4X4 and I am trying to decide weather or not to have it worked on by a repair co. or if it is advisable for me to continue to troubleshoot myself? I was driving at about 45mph. when the all digital dash odometer line started blinking, playing with the reset trip mile button had no effect.I turned off the engine for 5min. and it started OK I went another 5mi. when the odometer line read "ERROR".After 5 more mi.I slowed for a light and she started to stall like post ignition.I turned off the motor and tried to start but she would just turn over.I checked for gas, checked fuses, relays at fuse box and on firewall,I have limited mobility so I do not know if I can remove the dash as has been suggested.I do not own a code reader so I am wondering if I access the computer Is there anything I can do other than look for the obvious? Any help would be Welcome! |

Good news Fanuttin - First, you're thinking straight... "See if you can troubleshoot something yourself before spending big bucks". [)]
Second piece of good news - Since your rig is a '92, you don't have to have a fancy code reader, instead you can jump 2 pins on your ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostics Link) port and read the errors from your "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP"
light. The ALDL is typically located under the steering wheel and looks like the image below. Also, note that pins A and B are jumped using a paper clip (A = Ground, B = Diagnostic Terminal).

Here's how you make it all work:
1. First you must locate the ALDL connector which again, should be under your steering wheel, but I've seen it under the radio area too on some cars.
2. With ignition "ON" and engine "NOT RUNNING" use a jumper (paper clip) and connect terminal "B" to terminal "A". Terminal "A" is the ground connection.
3. The ECM will cause the "Service Engine Soon" light to flash Code 12 (one flash - pause - 2 flashes - longer pause -- repeat...), indicating that the ECM diagnostics are working. Code 12 will flash three (3) times, followed by any other trouble codes stored in memory. Each additional code will flash three (3) times, starting with the lowest code, and then start over again with Code 12. If there are no other codes, Code 12 will flash until the diagnostic jumper is disconnected or the engine is started.
Example: An error Code 13 will be: 12,12,12 - longer pause - 13,13,13 - longer pause - 12,12,12...
4. To clear the codes, shut the ignition "OFF" and remove the ECM supply voltage for 10 seconds. This is the orange wire and connector located behind the battery. Re-connecting this wire will cause the ECM to reset which clears the Malfunction Codes.
Here are the trouble codes for your 1992 GMC Jimmy / Chevy Blazer:
12 - ECM Diagnostics System Functional
13 - Open Oxygen Sensor Circuit
14 - Coolant Sensor Circuit Shorted
15 - Coolant Sensor Circuit Open
21 - Throttle Position Sensor (Signal Voltage High)
22 - Throttle Position Sensor (Signal Voltage Low)
24 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit
25 - Manifold Air Temperature Sensor (MAT) Shorted
28 - Pressure Switch Manifold (PSM) Fault
32 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation System
33 - Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP) Voltage High)
34 - Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP) Voltage Low)
35 - Idle Air Control (IAC) System
39 - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Stuck "Off"
43 - Electronic Spark Control (ESC) Circuit
44 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Lean Exhaust Indicated
45 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Rich Exhaust Indicated
51 - Faulty Mem-Cal or PROM Problem
52 - Fuel CALPAK Missing
53 - Over Voltage Error
54 - Fuel Pump Circuit (Low Voltage)
58 - Transmission Temperature Sensor Circuit (High Temp)
59 - Transmission Temperature Sensor Circuit (Low Temp)
68 - Overdrive Ratio Error
73 - Force Motor Current Error
75 - System Voltage Low
81 - Shift Solenoid "B" Circuit Fault
82 - Shift Solenoid "A" Circuit Fault
83 - TCC Solenoid Circuit Fault
85 - Undefined Ratio
86 - Low Ratio
87 - High Ratio
Anyhow... give that a shot and let us know what you find. I have troubleshooting guides for most of the codes listed above.
P.S. - if you just get code 12 (or some codes that aren't necessarily related to your problem), then I would suspect that you have a short in the charging / electrical system. But lets start by pulling any codes off of your ALDL first.
Regards,
Rick |

P.S.S. There's a "Printer Friendly" link at the top and bottom of this thread. You may want to print this out and take it with you when you're trouble shooting.

| OK,well I followed your very detailed instructions, here is what I got. With jumper in place and ignition switch on,all dash gages & lights on,Odometer reads correctly service engine, batt, oil lights flashing,No Code # displayed. The only orange wire I saw at battery location was connected to the hot side of the battery cable.I will provide some other "odd" things, key left in ign. warning bell sounds 3X and stop's,when battery is connected all door locks open, int.roof light intermittent on/off with all doors closed(no flicker)I disconnect the battery ground when when she sits. Please advise,Thank's |

You've got an electrical gremlin... These are very odd signs and symptoms.
Here's the next thing I'd do (if it were my truck).
I'd hook the battery up and put the ignition to the run position (with the engine NOT running). Sit someone in the drivers seat to watch the dash panel, interior lights, etc. With a good thick pair of rubber or leather gloves, start at the front of the rig and start vigorously wiggling and pulling on the wiring harnesses. I'd start at the headlight harness and work your way towards the firewall, paying particular attention to places where the harnesses join each other, or go into a fuse block. Your passenger should report anything that happens (e.g. light flicker). If he/she does report something, try and reproduce it by wiggling more gently in specific areas.
You may get lucky and find an open or short in a circuit or wire. My guess is that you either have an open/short circuit, or there's water in a junction box/fuze box/etc.

Best of luck Fanuttin! Sorry we weren't able to get something fixed sooner (I don't know about you, but I hate running away from a fight and giving into "the man" and forking out hard-earned cash). [:)]
Keep us posted!

| Well I got One Fix and one I hope It's fixed! I guess all that pokin around I did In the wiring drying cleaning and re-seating did something because neither me or a shop owner can reproduce the odd dash and other electrical gremlins that were bugging me when last I posted.Oh the fix,a rebuilt distributer did the trick,I guess 15 years & 150,000 mi.will do that.Anyway I'm as happy as a pig in sh$t to have her back.I thank you again for your help.[dance][dance][:D] |
