I just bought a 03 S10 crew cab ZR5 4wd. 2 questions. I had a z71 and the rear axle had lockers from the factory, is this a standard option with the zr5 package or with the crew cab 4wd package? Also, what is the diff between the zr2 and the zr5? When I look under nada pricing, it ask me what package it is, zr2 xtreme or zr5 sport. Obviously, I have the zr5, but curious what the other offers, or if I could have both. Thanks for the help. Louie

you had a limited slip in the rear. i forgot what code that was tho. i didnt think they had a locker in the rear.

look on a chevy full size forum. they have a section to let you know what code they are.

Hi Louie - your '03 S10 crew cab ZR5 didn't offer rear axle lockers as a facotry option. It did have a posi-traction, but not a locker. Perhaps that was added by the dealer or someone else who bought it later.

The ZR5 package was a "sport package" upgrade, which cost the new purchases $1,500, and included: a roof rack, wheel flares, black anodized bed rails and side steps, 15" X 7" cast aluminum, five-spoke wheels with spectra gray accents, 235/75R-15 Goodyear Wrangler tires and ZR5 decals.

In addition to the ZR5 package, your Crew Cab came replete with, as standard equipment, driver and right front passenger air bags, antilock brakes, fog lights, power door locks, power windows, air conditioning and an electronic compass.

The ZR2 package was a bit more rare, but was NOT part of the S10 "Extreme" trim level. More specifically, the ZR2 was a beefier off-road package which was offered for a few years and included things like a wider stance, heavy-duty Bilstein shocks, aggressive tires and the likes. It didn't do too well as the ride quality wasn't what the public wanted.

The "Extreme" package was a low-rider, sport package that Chevy offered for several years in the standard-cab version of the S10. It was essentially a slammed S10 with stiff suspension and ground effects.

All three of these trim levels were offered seperately, and not together.

P.S. NADA is notorious for screwing up the trim-levels with trucks. Galves or KBB usually get them more acurately when it comes to booking out and valuing these vehicles (obviously Galves is mid-atlantic focused though).

Once again, your knowledge seems endless Rick. I am surprised you didn't tell me how much I bought it for. (smiles) I didnt mean to imply the truck CAME with lockers, was just curious if it was an option hoping I maybe had it. I was in the market for a z71, but this thing grew on me the more I looked at it. Black with black leather int, loaded to the max. 4.3 and had 77k miles. Super clean. NADA and KELLY showed the truck worth anywhere from 15500 to 18500 and I got it for 13,900. I have always been a full size man. Maybe my 47 years of age has slowed me down.

No way man, the S10 had become quite a great truck. Heck I still own a 1993 with the 4.3Z Vortec motor and the 5spd. It has what I would have presumed to be a locker (as it ALWAYS leaves two strips of rubber behind), but I do believe that it is just a properly working GOV Loc, aka Limited Slip. They are great trucks, though quite expensive for parts, lol.

I never figured out why they GM called it a Locker (likely for sales hype) because the GovLoc is not a locker. It is merely a governor control clutch based LSD. Personally I prefer a more conventional LSD myself.

No doubt, I agree with you on the name GOV-Loc. It doesnt really make alot of sense as it is not a locker. But for whatever reason, mine locks up every time. Good stuff!! Check out my new pics of my new build in the oops sec.

So, are you all saying that my s-10 crew HAS Gov-Loc? I already jacked it up, and the rear wheels spin in opposite rotation......not a good sign for me. But now you are saying g0v-loc. I am not sure I know what that means, though I can guess based on that one statement......clutches that regulate the Amount of ecessive spin of the tires? So that is a world in between lockers and nothing? Also, one other question....on the dash right of the steering whell, left of the radio, there is this button, or rocker switch sitting in the middle of nowhere (not aftermarket). The markings on the switch is a straight verticle line on top and the bottom a round circle. I have hit this thing 25 times, and see nothing happening except a little red led light on the radio flashing on and off just a blink of an eye, but this button is NOT part of the radio system I promise. Any help would be nice. Truck came with no owners manual, and driving into a dealership with those questions get me aggravated looks all the time. Thanks LOuie

as far as the button goes maybe it could go with a tow package or something but i dont see how it would effect a light on the radio.

edit: and the little red flash you get off the radio i think should always flash every few minutes...unless the battery isnt connected.

As I recall it takes about a 200 RPM difference between axles for it to trigger the clutches. Do not panic if you do not have one as I have plowed snow for over 20 year mostly without LSD in trucks by choice and never really regretted it either.
