What would cause my truck to constantly idle at around 1500rpm? Every once in a while the check engine light comes on but only briefly.

Can you tell us what the yr/make/model of your truck is? Also, the size of the engine, the number of miles, etc. would be helpful.

Check gasket under TBI assembly between it and intake manifold. I had a similar problem on my 89 several years ago and it proved to be a bad gasket.

I was about to suggest a vacuum leak as well. I'll bet Snoman is right.

What is involved in changing that gasket? Sounds like that could be a nasty repair.

Nothing to it. Simply removed TBI unit from intake. There is about 4 bolts holding it on and a few lines to disconnect and a few electrical connector too if you want to completely remove it from vehicle. There is a very thick gasket under it that is prone to fail with age.

Also check those pesky plastic vaccuum lines coming off the TBI. I've had them crack or break and cause that too.

yup - changing that gasket is a piece of cake.

Be sure to stuff some rags into the intake manifold so that junk doesn't fall inside there when you're working on it. Also, take a putty knife and clean any remenant gasket material off of the TBI unit and/or the manifold.

You should be able to do this in well under an hour, even if you've never done it before.
