DUDE!!! That seriously sucks, BAD!!!!![zomb] I'm really sorry to hear that that happened.

As far as boxing goes, you can box the entire frame from the front horns all the way back to about 6" behind the axle. Anything else probably don't do you any good, unless you plan on mounting a serious hitch point and/or an embedded winch.

Jody (a.k.a. Yoda on the boards) is my tech editor, and he's doing a similar project but with a fully integrated rollcage as part of the frame. I'd like to get his opinion on this as he's the engineer in the group. ;)

But experience tells me that anything past the rear axle is just unecessary weight.

Yoda... what do you think?

I agree on that too Webby. Though, wait till you see this rear bumper I just got with this V3500. I actually traded my Springfield XD9 and 200 dollars for a running driving 85 V3500 Chevy. Then I sold my old THM350 for 300 bucks yesterday making up the cash I spent then some. But anyways, the rearbumper is actually made to tie into the frame under the bed. So I was thinking about just boxing it anyways. But I will wait until I get some picks up, so you can see what I have to work with. Any help on the chassis thing would be great. I may actually be using the steel from the V3500s chassis to box my frame, lol. Steel is too expensive to waste nowadays.

Dang, thats outrageous. Well, I will keep you guys posted on what I do. If you have any cool ideas for my rig, or just some advice on anything...it would be great. I have literally decided to start from the ground up, and I want it to be done right. I might as well, sice I have most of the stuff to do it. I am not into restoring it or anything like that, the body WILL be beat up. lol. But the chassis, motor, tranny/tcase, and suspension is going to have alot of work into it. Thanks alot!!

You might consider stubbing out the supports for an internal roll cage... that way thay can be sandwiched together when everythign is said and done. Somethign to chew on.

Hmm, good idea. Like bringing supports out from the side of the frame, or going on top of the frame? It will be my first cage'. And I dont even have a tubing bender at all....

it's an old school trick. You can also sandwich a section of 1/8" thick rubber or poly between the plates, so that it doesn't rattle. Not that it will matter, right? :)

Haha, nah. Would it be good to weld it instead of bolt it? Or does that defeat the purpous?

A local fab shop should be able to make you some in a matter of minutes. Search around and see what people can do. If you get in a bind, let me know and I can make you some for the cost of metal and shipping. My new 1 3/4" die should be in tomorrow or early this week and I can jam a bunch of .090 or .120 wall ERW in an hour or so.

Bolt the two plates together as seen in the picture... this way, if something happens to the roll cage, or the lower mount, you can replace just that section.

If you're asking if you should bolt the lower portion to the frame, vs. weld it... that's really your call - either would work well. If you do weld it, I suggest that you cut a hole all the way through the frame, so that it comes through the other side, so that both sides can be welded (much stronger that way vs. just welding it to the surface).

Ooooo, cool. lol. thanks, I might take you up on that. I will see what I can do here. There should be a shop somewhere that can bend me up some tubing. What I do need is a drawing of an acceptable cage, internal or exo style. Seeing as how I have never made one, I dont know what the standards are.

Well, I will have 3 weeks to get some good ideas together on paper. I figure, I will build up the motor etc. and leave it to the side while I finish the chassis and cage. I am also wanting to order up ORD's crossover setup, though I have a 8in suspension kit...do I need the highsteer? I should prolly just call them. lol.

Well... let me tell ya. Making one on your own the first (and second, and third for that matter) time, will be VERY VERY expensive. Expect to throw away a whole lot of tubing (about 1/2 of your supply) until you get it all perfect. It took me about $200 worth of tubing to get some of the more complex stuff down pat. And, I also found that if I don't bend for a few weeks, I get really rusty, real quick. [barf2]

If I were you, you might want to call Steve Watson at ORD (tell him Rick Webster sent you) and see if he has any pre-made cages, or knows where to get them.

I had an internal cage in my '84 Blazer years ago. It was a kit that I bought, but I don't remember where I got it. I know it was kind of tough to find though, but my memory is failing me.

Yea, I will do that for sure. I am always keeping my eyes open for steel, but tubing is rare. I did, however weld up my "rollbar" in the bed, and welded it to the bed. I was thinking about using some 4in by 4in 1/8th thick tubing I have to tie it to the chassis...

So, I am pretty flippin excited. I got the new block (.30 over, Comp Cam) all assembled and installed into my truck. Right along with the THM400 and NP205 with the T-Case lowering kit. It fired right up, timing was only off a little bit. I cant really drive it yet, I only got it to the point to where I can fire it up. I still have the alternator and power steering, and D60 to install. Also I need to order a electric fan for the radiator and a external cooler for the tranny.

SWEET!!!!

I've been running the Flex-a-lite Black Magic X-Treme fan for years (http://www.4x4review.com/products/electrical/FAL-BMXtreme.asp) and love it. They also make thermostatically controlled / switched trans coolers too.

Send in some pics of the new mill!

Hopefully I will have more soon. Those were all taken with my phone, my camera broke lol. Everything has gone smoothly though. Next up is that electric fan, new drive shafts, HydroBoost brakes, and possibly a crossover settup from ORD (though I have been seriously contimplating full Hydro steering). Also soon, another set of new 42inch TSL's.

Rock on!!! Looking pretty solid man!

I know you didn't ask for my opinion... :) But, you might want to steer away (pun intended) from full hydro steering. There is zero feedback through the steering wheel and most systems don't self-center. That sounds trivial, but it's actually pretty difficult to drive, especially if you do any street driving at all. I've driven a few rigs with full hydro and didn't like it. Anyhow, that's my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you just paid for it. :)

Motor is looking good man!

Haha, your opinion is always valued here. Well I have actually drivin a few rigs with full hydro. I know exactly what you mean about the "no feedback" issue. But this truck already get far too much attention from the special people in white and black, lol. So it is going to be trailered for the most part. Which is really unfortunate that the rules are getting so strict here. One law says that your chassis may not be more than 24 inches from the lowest part to the ground. (hmm stock Super Dutys are out then). That also means I cannot drive my daily (6inch and 35s) without the fear of being pulled over and being handed a 600 dollar ticket.

As far as the Hydro goes, it is still just a though. Since I dont have all the parts to do it, I will probably go with the crossover from ORD. But that is just as expensive in the end. I can do a full hydro settup for about 400 bucks here. I have a buddy that has all the stuff I need to do it, except the steering box. Which I can have ported somewhere else.

I have alot of work ahead of me as far as the front axle goes. That includes steering components, joints, gears, and brakes. But hopefully I will have it all done next time home, about 3 weeks.

Well, I got the cooling system mostly together. I will be getting that Black Magik electric fan and the matching trans cooler setup when I am on slope. Man this motor sounds freakin sick. Even better than my last one, I think it is because of the different cam. It runs REAL smooth, yet has that gallop to it. And as my own little product review: I have run the same Truck Avenger carb on my last 3 motors, and cannot be happier. If you are going to go with a carb for offroad, go with the Holley Truck Avenger, they have a few different CFM ratings for your application. I personally run the 670 on my hot 350. When I do get my fans and possibly electric water pump, I will post up some pics of my install. Also, I will be getting a B&M truck shifter which I will do some pics on.

I still have the crossover to do, the rear disks, the front D60, bucket seats that accept 4 point harnesses, guages, and snorkle to name a few. Plus I will be doing a dual alternator/battery settup to power my 110 Hobart Handler welder. A toolbox/fuel cell (later on), and the rear bumper. Thanks for your help thusfar Rick, you rock![banger][banger][S]

Good news. I went ahead with buying the Black Magic Extreme 3,300cfm radiator fan by Flex-A-Lite. And also went with the B&M Transmission Hi-Tek cooler with the 650 cfm fan and thermostat. And went with the B&M Mega Truck Shifter. I plan on mounting the tranny cooler in the bed. This is the best place for me to keep it safe. You know, from mud, rocks, water, etc. I am pretty stoked about getting them installed and ready to go. I am also planning on ordering new 42X14X15 Irok bias. What do you think Webby? Everyone I know is saying they are the best now. But how are they in comparison to TSL's???

Deffinately going with the TSL's. I just got a few pics from Alaska4x4network.com and the sidewalls were all chunked out. The guy said that they are just too soft to run in the roots and granite out here. He says they stick great, but wear too fast. Sooo... I made up my mind....lol

No, the Irok bias did. But I ended up ordering some new TSL's instead. I got alot of feedback from the guys that wheel up here. The concencus seemed to be to just stick with the TSL's. But The project 84K10 may be on hold for a bit. This morning I found out that my house was broke into. They stole alot, including birth certs, checkbooks, my OxyActetyl setup, guitars, guns, etc..... Plus they wrote checks in both my and my fiances names (over 2000 so far). So all our accounts are frozen etc.

So, I went ahead and installed the Black Magic Extreme. WOW, that thing moves some freakin air, damn... I have some good pics. It was a pretty easy install. I decided to weld my brackets onto my radiator core support. It looks good. Though, I got the truck to temp, and tried to adjust the thermostat to come on, and it wouldnt. So I guess I need to use a switch and do it my self when it gets warm...

I am going to install the B&M shifter next. Though, I need my torch to bend the T-case shifter lever over to the pass side (some reason its bent over to the left not straight.) then I can do that. I have to go buy a new set of hoses, regulators, and tips and tanks..... sucks....

Here are a few recent pics. Just include the fan installation and getting the D60 into position. Sice my jack is missing, I had an interesting time getting the truck up high enough to get the front axle in. Even with stock 285 tires. I will have to probably put a 1 or 2 inch block in the rear to level it out. Giving the truck a grand total of 12-13 inches. Its getting too tall.......

All set ChevyMan, I resized all of them for you. ;)

That's a pretty sweet fan. I did notice though, that it doesn't cover all of your radiator. I wonder if it will be effective enough to cool your motor?

Something else you can do... I put a switch inside the cab to cut the fan on automatically. On a particularly warm day, I turn the fan on with the switch, as soon as I start the motor. That way it helps to keep everything cooler, and doesn't allow it to get as hot. It helps a little.

Crap, so the fan is supposed to cover the entire radiator huh?? I didnt notice any different sizes on the Summit website. So I just assumed it was an adjustable fit. Or that it was supposed to be that way..... Man, that thing was like 300 bones...

Man, I just looked at your review of the same fan. You are right, it is pretty small.... I wonder what I can do to make it work. I seriously doubt that Summit is going to take that thing back. The dang thing said it would fit my radiator. Ahhhhh, damn them..... oh, and me...lol

yeah... since the fan has a shroud built into it, it's designed to cover the radiator (as much as possible). The idea, being that you force as much of the air through the radiator and through the fan as possible. Anything else is just blow-by.

They do make dual-fan kits (side-by-disde) that are designed for your big-ass Chevy radiator.

If Summit won't take it back (I'd call and ask), then I'd at least try it out for a while and see if it works. If you have a cool running motor, then don't sweat it. You can always e-bay it or sell it locally, later, for $200 or so.

Yea, I had it running today. It seems to take a little long to fire up and get going. Maybe its just me being paranoid. My temp guage is on the fritz, right along with every other guage...so new manual ones are in order.

Well, after idling it for about 20mins....the fan seems to be keepin her cool. So I am confident that it will be good on the road. The real test will be when I am in a deep hole rackin 5 grand for 10 mins. Then we will see if the fan does its job. I am pretty confident it will. Especially since the tranny will be on its own cooler. Kinda freaked me out.....I shut the truck down, and the fan shut off about 3 mins later. Then I was cleaning up, and it kicked on all the sudden...made me jump pretty high. Lol, that rocks though, I have never owned a electric fan before.

Yeah, the first time that happened to me, I had to changed my shorts. There's a big red sticker on the fan warning you of it, but the first time that happens, you crap yourself.

Well, I have the D60 in. Just trying to install all the steering corrections. I have a 4in drop pitman arm, S-shaped drag link, and a 2.5 inch tall steering arm lift block. I am kind of curious about how the lift block is installed though. I assume that the inner block cylinder goes ontop of the spring. But man, do you have to compress it all just to get the nuts on the bolts.... Its tough, I still havent got it installed. I kinda gave up after a few hours of wrestling with it. Got any tips Webby? Anyone?? I have my new TSL's finally too. Dang, they are a bit heavier than the old ones (thicker sidewalls I think). Also started taking my hubs apart to get to the axles, and realized that I do not have all the tools to do the job. So I will take it down the street for that. I realized I have the "Bendix" brakes. Know anything about these?? Are they better than the Delco??
