The 286 / 70R17 should fit without a lift. You tire might rub the inner fender a bit when you're turning the wheel though. Don't go any wider than stock, or it will definatley rub.
Alternatively, you can put a 1 or 2" body lift on your truck and clear those just fine (and even slightly larger tires).

| I actually cranked my tortion bars a little bit on my 01' and I have 295-75-16 BFG All Terrains on it. They rub a bit on the control arms and fenders when I turn all the way, but not a big deal!! |

Actually... I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4X4 and *just* put 285 75/R16's on there today. They do rub quite a bit, even though it's a 4x4 model. I had to cut quite a bit of the fender liner back, and trim the lower plastic valence on the front bumper to keep it from rubbing.
On your 1/2 ton, it sites just a bit lower, so 285's may rub quite a bit. If you're not afraid of trimming your fenders and maybe cranking up the torsion bars a tiny bit, you'll be fine. Otherwise, stick with the 265's.
