Wholly crap Louis! In a thousand years, I would have never thought that this would have been an issue, especially getting a good, high quality timing chain set.

I'm glad to know that you finally got the issues fixed though!!!

No, no damage I am aware of, just a rattle that drives me crazy. It seems no one is aware of why or how concerning when it happens, or why it happens to a select few 4.3's and not others. Guess I drew the short straw. Chevy aware of it, hence why they put out a bulletin on it. But I'll tell you what, I cant believe its not more "KNOWN". Nobody, and I mean NOBODY knows about this, yet there are service bulletins out on it. So that tells me that it is still VERY RARE of a problem, or most people could care less about the rattle. Well, I hope there is no damage. That would be a bummer. I wouldnt run it till you got the tensioner installed. That is just my opinion. Just to keep the vibrations from ruining your seals or bearings. That would be very problematic, and it could end up being fatal for your motor (especially with the main bearings).

ChevyMan0784, you are scaring the hell out of me. I have already decided to just let it go and let the rattle rattle away.... So far, everyone I have spoke to has said that it wont hurt anything. Then again, I have you warning me....scary!!!!! I am STILL doing research. Just found a sight called S10forum.com. Seems there is a bit of scuttle butt going around about that rattle. But like this site, it must have a virus too, as I am having been having problems all evening accessing the info concerning it. But all fingers point to a new rail system (tensioner) for the chain to sit in to prevent this from happening. There is also another bulletin out on it, an AERA bulletin #TB2235. Dont know what an AERA is, but not having luck finding or pulling up that bulletin yet. Everytime I try to access it, it takes me to a sales site trying to sell me something to correct it. Cant seem to actually read the thing itself.

Finding service bulletins is a real nightmare. They're a well-kept secret from the manufacturer, for obvious reasons!

I'm going to depart a bit with ChevyMan's thoughts on this (respectfully, of course). All un-tensioned timing chains have some play to them, and therefore are designed to have some vibration in them as well. I can't spout off some fact-based statistics about torsional hoocheemacallits or vibrational dampening wifflesnargets, but I have been told that some vibration in a chain is normal. Accordingly, I wouldn't think that a slaight vibration there should affect the main bearing, as it is not causing an imbalance in the crank shaft or camshaft (two different types of forces at play).

Now... I could be wrong, but in my simpleton mind, I don't think that a ticking sound should cause any grave concerns.

That all being said - if the ticking is bothering you and you have some concerns about it, just get the tensioner put on the engine. My ejumacated guess at this point is that your research will yield no definitive results that will absoltuely tell you "yes, you MUST install this tensioner", or "No, the tensioner is completely optional and not installing it will not affect any warranty". Manufacturers are careful about claims like this, again, for obvious reasons.

Make sense, or am I rambling as usual? :)

Well, on that point Rick, and that point only, I am getting absolutes on the adding of the tensioner. It simply cannot be solved any other way. The tensioner is the only fix at present to make that rattle go away. AND YES, it BUGS the heck out of me. It fairly loud. I mean if the radios on, normal volume, or if the windows are down, you CANNOT hear it. But if its all quiet, it can be heard distinctly through the cab. Again, put it to you this way, I have never drove the truck to a shop, rev the engine, and not had anyone NOT hear it right off. Its there. Its noticeable. Its ditinct. About equal to ticking lifters......Obviously, after just having one put in, I am not thrilled at all about going throught this again, and because of the amount of money I am putting into this thing, I think I am just gonna let it goooooooooooooooooo. I THINK i can, I THINK, i can, I THINK i can.....but I amnot one to put off problems. If it aint right....I WANT IT RIGHT. This may be an exception.
