I would definatley consider upgrading axles at this point. A rear Dana 44 or even a Ford 9" should be more than strong enough to handle the load, and they're cheap, cheap, cheap!!! :)

The rear whine is probably coming from the bearings giving out (if it's a squealing sound). If it's a humming sound, then it's typically the gears. Either way, your S10 rear axle was never built for the type of duty you're throwing at it.

Although, if you put too much more money into this thing, you might as well consider buying a 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup truck. :)

Anyhow, doing an axle swap isn't that tough for someone who knows what they're doing. Any reputable 4-wheel drive shop should be able to do the installation on it in 1-2- days.

Def not a squeal.....humming or the way. If you are in driven mode....hums. If you take foot off of the gas and coast, it goes quiet as a mouse, but give it gas, and it hums. Had bearings replaced 1 year ago cause seals were leaking. But one last question.......drive it till it fails? Or do PM on it?

Well, if you are going to upgrade that axle then I would PM it before something fatal. This is because you do not want to ruin the axle shafts by blowing the gears or bearings, etc. Try to save as many parts as possible. As it stands, having some one do your gears and bearings is going to be fairly expensive. But it would be worth it. That or what Webby is saying, just replace it will a D44 or Ford 9inch. 10 bolts are EXTREMELY easy to come by in junk yards and on Craigslist.com . They are inexpensive too. So you have some pretty good options. Do some research online and around town, see what you can come up with. Then we can tell you what the best way would be to go.

OK, much better description. This is DEFINATELY a gear problem then. You see, the ring gear, and the pinion gear, have two side to the teeth on them. One side is used under power (accelleration), and the other side of the gear tooth face is used when coasting.

Some gears are noisier than others (due in part to the metals used, the cut of the teeth, the surface structure, etc.) regardless of how they are "set up".

Also, this same noise can be a component of less-than-perfect gear setup (a.k.a. "the pattern is bad") too. Or, it can be a combination of both.

Have you recently had new gears put in your truck? If so, I would definately take it back to the shop that put them in, and have them check the gear pattern. This can be adjusted with shims on both the ring gear and the pinion gear. It's a real science setting up gears... lots of math, lots of experience, etc. I've setup about a dozen sets of gears in my life and it's not the easiest thing to do (not impossible, and less complex than, say, rebuilding an automatic transmission).

That's my .02 cents.

Uhh, yea. Webby, you just nominated yourself to writing a article on setting up gears. Specifically in a d60 front and C14BFF rear. Sucka....lol.

Hmmmm, ok, so maybe, you are saying, that it is possible that the ring and pinion just need to be replaced. Oh hell, piece of cake, I can knock that out in my driveway over the course of the next year or so. Do I use oak or cedar shims? Last work done on rear was axle seals leaking. Had new bearings, seals, brakes, blah, blah blah. I should have just bought a damn cargo van. But noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I gots me a niiiiiiiiiiice p/u truck just sittin here baby doing nothin at all. I can convert it into a plumbing rig and save an extra van payment every month. All I need is a new $2100 ARE commercial top to work out of it......oh.....yeah, gee, my tires are new, but sagging and swaying when I go around turns....lets just put some new tires on load range D.......oh.....the back is sagging........with all this newfound wieght.......well.....lets just add some leaf springs.........OH.......my axle is making a humming sound............$5,000 later, the price of a GOOD USED VAN.....and I am still dealing with this thing. Only has 85k on it, solid black.....with a matching black top......but all told, not to mention the dozens of little fixes here and there ($1500 worth)I am ready to committ suicide. Just gotta go unclog that sewer first......with my NICE, SHINY BLACK 4 door, 4x4 S-10......with a rattle from HELL.......I HATE MYSELF....
