Started with come alongs, but seeing as I just keep spending money on this truck, I figured I put some money into something fun. So questions abound.

1) Figuring on a 8000 pd. Much cheaper then the 10 and 12, and if I am not mistaken, with a pully, its 16,000 pds, right?

2) I know, I know, Warn is the bomb. But seeing as how I may only actually use my winch 1/2 dozen times before my tranny or engine blows, what do you all think about Ramsey and Mile marker as an alternative?

3) Mile Marker looks pretty tough and is pretty cheap $600 for a 12,000 pd, and $450 for a 8,000pd? I have heard Ramsey is not a bad winch at all? What ya think?

OK... here goes my .02 cents.

8,000 pounds should suffice for the size of truck you have just fine. Yes, putting a pulley inline, effectively doubles your pulling power, but only when you are at the very last wrap of rope on the winch drum. Each successive roll of rope on the winch drum effectively decreases the pulling power, since the circumference increases.

Now... remember that while you can add two or three pulleys to your winch and effectively double or triple the pulling power, it's important to remember the other weak links that may not be able to deal with that stress. Examples include: winch rope/cable, mounting points, etc.

Yes, Warn is the best. In my humble opinion, in order of quality, it goes like this: 1) Warn 2) Ramsey 3) TMax 4) Super Winch 5) Mile Marker

Since you don't want to blow your wad on an expensive winch, I would strongly suggest that you give both TMax and SuperWinch a look (in that order).

MileMarker winches are made in China wtih less-than-perfect tolerances and QA. We reviewed one a while back (http://www.4x4review.com/products/electrical/milemarker-E12000.asp), and while it functioned flawlessly for the first few months, we did start having issues with it later (blown solenoid X2, the motor is now starting to make grinding sounds, clutch engagement problems, etc.). We haven't updated the review yet, but trust me - we have had a number of issues with it, and many other people have too.

I think that if you use it more than a dozen time, you'll have had to invest another hundred or so into it to rebuild various parts.

Here's the thing about a winch... When you need it, you REALLLLLLY need it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Rick.....now that was a GREAT reply. Not to say that your others have not been great. Funny, but I never thought about other loads with a pully. Just assumed the cable would hold with a pully, better said, that a cable for 8000 would hold with a pully making it 16000. Stupid of me to assume that now that you mentioned it. Guess it all revolves around whether or not I am actually pulling something that requires 16,000 pds of force. 8000 pds STUCK could require 16000 pull. I also heard way back when I was a Jr. Rooter man that the length of the cable, say out at 100ft has more strength because the wieght is distributed along the entire 100ft cable versus say 20 ft of cable. I always assumed that was true, as it made sense. But never had this website before to double check my thinking. Heard anything about that? I am soooooo glad I asked you about Mile Marker. TMAX and Superwinch here I come.

I agree with Rick for sure on the T-Max as an "inexpensive" alternative. I have heard great things about them, and have seen two in action. They worked without a hitch. That could also be because they were the 10k and 12k models. But for the money that you would spend on a 9k from Warn, you could buy a 12k from T-Max. And if you break a 12k on your truck, let me know so I can buy you a round of your favorite drink! I kid, but really...its not a bad thought for the cash straped dude. Just dont look at the front of my rig. I am really cheap. I use a brand called "yea, I am pretty sure you can winch me out....I think..."
