Ahhh... the ol' Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction

This typically means that a part of your evaporative system is broke (duh [:)]). Your evap system has a whole bunch of parts, such as the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and so on. The evap system's purpose is to keep fuel vapors from your fuel system, from escaping into the atmosphere. Those vapors are designed to be routed through hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. When your engine is running, the purge control valve opens up and allows the intake manifold to suck the fuel vapors into the engine where they can be burned and cleanly dispersed into the air.

The problem is, when something in your evap system goes wrong, you won't really notice anything at all - that is, there really are no symptoms at all, unless something is completely plugged up, and fuel drips on occassion (but this is very rare).

So... what do you look for? - The gas cap is not installed or working properly - The purge solenoid has failed - The canister is plugged and not working properly

Possible Fixes - Inspect all of the hoses to make sure they're connected, and check for dryrot, cracked, split or cut hosts, especially around the evaporative purge solenoid and the charcoal canister.

- Remove, clean and reinstall the gas cap. Clear your codes with a code clearing device, and then drive for a day or two and see if the code comes back. If that doesn't work, replace the gas cap and repeat.

- Replace the sensor

- Check and/or replace the purge valve

- Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

I tried to put these in order of cheapest to most expensive.

Hope that helps.

Rick
