Is there any advantage to going with a complete reman rear end versus say a 3rd member? I am assuming that the 3rd member is basically the whole rear end more or less, right? I mean what would be left if a new 3rd was put in.

Ok, this can confuse some people. GM does not have an axle with a 3rd member (unless it is a full size one ton from the 60s, then it has an Eaton with a 3rd member). Basically a 3rd member is what contains all the ring and pinion just like a standard differential. The difference is that it can be removed as a whole. So you pull the 3rd member out from the front of a (rear only) axle and out comes the ring and pinion still settup and attatched. An axle that would contain a 3rd member, for example, would be a Ford 9 inch. Look up "Ford 9inch 3rd member" online, and you will see what I am talking about.

Ok, now that we have all that techishness out of the way... What you really do want is a decent, used, complete, GM 10 Bolt for a (whatever year you have, but it really shouldnt matter since they ran the same width from the beggining to the end of the S10) S10. The only thing you want to do is retain your original gear ratio IF you have 4x4. If you DO NOT have 4x4, you can grab ANY GM 10 Bolt out of an S10 and it will bolt right up. The only other bolt up issue you may encounter is that the late 2000's had disc brakes. If your rig does or does not have disc brakes, just be sure that your new axle corrosponds with that. IE: if you have drum brakes in the rear, be sure your new axle has them. IF it has discs, then make sure the new one has em.
