| Does anyone know what years and in what vehicles Chevrolet used these automatic transmissions? How long have they been around? |

The 4l80E is based off the older TH400 tranny which was pretty damn strong and was used in a lot of 77-89 K10's-K30's. The 4l80E, upgraded with an overdrive and electronic shifting control, has been around since '91 in 1-ton suburbans and pickups and has a 2.48 first gear like the TH400. Jet has a kit to make it even stronger. There's also a retrofit kit to install it in older trucks (wires, electronics, etc). Hope that helps.
