Hey guys. 2003 Chevy S-10 4x4 crew cab....you know the truck. I kept the truck as a backup truck and had the rear axle rebuilt (everything, complete rebuild) last week. I drove it here and there just to make sure it was working and it was smooth as can be. No whine or anything. Drove great. But I was baby driving it. Just now I pulled out in front of traffic with the wheels turned sharp right and the rear end shuttered.
After doing testes here and there, it goes like this. Straight and it's fine. Sharp right or left hand turn, and the faster you give it gas, the worse it shutters. The rear wheels actually kind of skip. It has a warranty, but would like to know whats wrong so I can be informed when I bring it back. He said it was a posi rear end. |

It honestly sounds like the posi traction is doing it's thing... Did they replace the posi-traction unit during the rebuild? Rick |

well.....yes he did. he replaced everything. Carrier ring and pinion bearings, the works. All new.
He TOLD me I had a posi in the rear.....but I disagreed ( I didnt know 4 sure). I just had a feeling it didnt. It is a ZR5. Maybe you know if that was standard.
But all I know is it NEVER did that before. So if you are telling me that that's what a posi does.....skips on turns.....then I know for sure I never had one before and now I do.....what do you think Mr. Rick? |

well... in most cases, I've not heard posi-tractions do that around corners unless they were under about 50% acceleration or more. In most cases, the clutches in the positraction allow it to slip appropriately, but I'm guessing you have OE sized tires... couple that with a new positraction and it may very well chirp a bit. This is all based upon two major assumptions: 1) The shuddering you are feeling is the tires gripping and braking loose very quickly (is that what it feels like?) 2) That they really did put in a new positraction. Those suckers are expensive... they run about $500 or more, so you would see that pretty clearly on your receipt Rick |

My tires are a bit oversized....one size up. Yes....if I take corners normally...there is no problem at all...at least one that I notice. But if you get it....50% or more is a good analogy, then they feel like they grab and let go and grab and let go....pretty fast....like anti lock brakes....until you get going straight again.
Do not get me wrong....I would be tickled pink if he put one in. But either I didnt have one before or it was broken. Could have been what was causing the whining sound all this time.
But I can tell you it never grabbed like that before. It feels like you are hitting the brake on turns very fast. Grab, let loose, grab let loose, maybe 3 or 4 times a second.
I guess all I care about is if that is normal for a posi....then so be it. The benefits of a having a posi far outwiegh the negative I am describing. I just want to make sure he didnt mess something up in there, like maybe one wheel is supposed to spin freely around turns (limited slip) and its NOT. That something isnt right.
I just dont want to barge in there Monday looking like an idiot...... |

| super easy fix any idiot who can set up a rear end could fix this if its what i think it is. take it back and tell them you wnat whale sperm put in the rear end. its not a joke. it greases the clutches in the posi and makes everything smooth. you def have a posi even my base stock 94 blazer had a posi in it there actually really comon. my only problem is i wonder whos jerkin off the whale to get the sperm. |

Don't get too excited... While it might be working well now, it won't be in a year or so. Posi's wear out quickly and eventually become open diff's all together. The clutches wear out over time and the more city driving you do, the quicker they wear out.

I agree... posi tractions are great for a while, but they wear out with street driving - total waste of money in my opinion. But hey, that's just my opinion. |
