Ok, so...My tranny is now lurching and makin crazy noises. Fluids are good, detent cable is fine, and linkage is good. Shifter works fine. So...I put it in drive and it "holds up" in the gears, kinda like its low on fluid. It also takes it a bit to engage in first(lag in response time). Also when I stop at a light or whatever, it will lurch or feel like it is in neutral. Now, its not the motor because the rpms dont change and the motor runs smooth(even though it now smokes a bit, not related). So, heres what I am running just in case it helps...5:13 gears, with 37X14.50X16 ProComp X-Terrains. And those axles I am using are of the HD D44 and 14 bolt variety. So, I hope some one has some advise as to what is wrong...because I know that 700R4s are NOT exacly cheap to buy or fix. And, I was thinking about just throwing in a TH350...but was told that missing the overdirve my cause problems with getting it IM tested. True or false? I am in Alaska, and we hold the same standards as CA SMOG. Any info would be much appreciated as always. Thanks

A 700R4 can be rebuilt to handle a big block easily so I would not get rid of it for a THM350 or even a THM 400. For one not only do you loose OD and locking converter but also a deeper first gear (3.06 on 700R4 and 2.52 on THM 3500 and 2.48 on 400) Your gearing is about right for tire size but if a 700R4 has one weakness it is heat and do use a aux tranny cooler after you have it repaired and I would advise against a shift kit in rebuild unless internal parts are beefed up because those kits put a lot of shock on sprages and such that can shorten their life.

I'm pickin up what'cha layin down...I do have an auxilary cooler, I think it is about 12"X3', its freaking huge. I am positive this tranny has been gone through before...but obviously not very well done. I do abuse it some, but I never had a tranny other than this one fail due to that. At what price would you say I am getting ripped off at? I got a quote for a full rebuild with beefed up parts and shift kit and new converter for about 2,000 bucks....I was like EEEEEKKKKKK!!!!! Maybe I will just buy a new one!!!

To do it right and upgrade weaker parts it costs a bit more than that but you should be able to get it rebuilt and beefed up for under 1500 or less. |

Couple other points on the 700R4 - there are two servos in the 700R4 that are notoriously weak in older models (GM fixed this with their later models, but it only lasted for two years before it was replaced (with the 4L60E and 4L80E, I think)). Also, many folks modify the slinger gears to provide better oiling too.
At any rate, I think you need to find a good tranny shop that will shoot you straight (I know, that's like saying "legal ethics", or "military intelligence"). They may be able to adjust the bands or maybe just do a good flush/filter change/replace clutch packs and it'll hold up for a while longer.

Oh yeah... one other point. You might want to give the guys at Jet Performance a call and ask them their thoughts. We did a review on their 700R4 about 7 years ago and we beat the snot out of that slush box with a full size Blazer (http://www.4x4review.com/products/drive_train/jet-trans.asp) - they build incredible trannys and have a lot of knowledge. Tell them that the guys from 4x4review.com sent you with some questions. I'm confident they'll shoot you straight.

The sprages and the spline on output of sun gear drum is a weak spot that GM has play with a few different fixs over the years and this needs to be upgraded for any serious power as I have seen them in shps with these output splines wrung off or stripped out (depending on which revision drum it has) Thew sprages are easy to upgrade

If you can swap tranny out yourself, you might check out a MadDog Gangster or Punisher tranny at the link below
