Alright, so I went with a cheap route for a winter vehicle. For 700 bucks I picked up a 93 S-10 with a 4.3L and a Standard 5spd. Problem...(you knew there had to be one right? I mean, no one pays 700 dollars for no problems...)there was a loud screaching everytime I pushed in the clutch...being the smart one I am, I kept driving on it. Until, that is, I stopped at a light...went to go, and the tranny spewed guts. Well after the dust settled, the engine still ran..and if you pushed the truck it could still go into gear. So I know that the tranny itself isn't completely gone(I hope), what I am asking though is everyones opinion on what happened and what I can do. Is there light at the end of the tunnel, or should I just junk the truck.

Likely the throwout bearing failed (source of noise) and damaged pressure plate release fingers and the clutch will not release anymore. You will have to drop tranny to inspect/change throwout bearing, pressure plate and clutch disc. One more suggestion, when you buy a used 4x4 wheter it is 700 or 7000 dollars, replace ol the fluids in it (engine, tranny, axles, Tcase) to get everything on the same "page" and you know where things are at maintanance wise.

believe it or not, I did change out all the fluids...but I should have had the clutch done I suppose. I dont really mess with trannys, so does it sound fatal if it is the throw out bearing...or is the whole thing shot...

You can wreck a clutch pretty bad and replace the clutch parts (disc. pressure plate and throwout bearing) and be back in bussiness. Tranny should be fine unless you have been grinding gears and forcing shift without clutchand causing damage to it.

It's not really that hard of a task if you have a good floor jack, a repair manual and standard tools.

Since you bought a beater and don’t want to sink a bunch of dough into it, I highly recommend that you get the cheapest possible clutch set (clutch plate, diaphragm and pressure plate - Autozone sells them for about $80). If you want to go REAL cheap, you can pull the flywheel (the big metal disc that bolts to the crankshaft) and put a straight edge on it. If it's not excessively warped, just take some 100 grit sandpaper or GENTLY use a belt sander to it to freshen up the surface and remove the glazing (I know SnoMan is cringing right now).

- The manual will cost $25 - A clutch alignment tool may be free with the kit, but if not will run you about $5 - A clutch kit should be about $80 - A pilot bushing / bearing kit will run you about $6 (even for a really good Timken unit)

You’ll also need a slide hammer for removing the old pilot bushing, but you can rent them at Autozone with a $20 deposit (you get your money back).

So for about $120 to $150, you could be back in business (given that you didn't blow up the gear sets or the syncro packs).

Manual transmissions are nothing to be afraid of. They’re brutally simple devices and quite easy to work on. A decent manual will walk you through the process, and in my opinion, if you can put a lift kit on a leaf sprung truck, you can likely change your clutch in an afternoon.

P.S. - if you're a little uneasy about doing it yourself (and maybe you're not - I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence), you can go to your local auto parts store and thumb through one of their repair manuals to see what you're up against first. Then, based upon the tools and skills needed, you can make an educated decision on whether or not you want to do it yourself.

Something to stew on.

Actually not at all. I am not a big fan of resurfacing/turning flywheels. Nothing wrong at all with sanding them to break the glaze on them if you want to. If a flywheel is warped it is best to just replace it because if you turn it flat you will have uneven stresses left in it (varing flywheel overall thickness) that can increase the chance of it warping again.

i might be wrong. i have not owned a manuel trans like in 6-8 years. but, when a throwout bearing takes a dump it makes the loud screeching noise when the clutch pedal is not engaged. it will go away when it is pressed in. i think you have a leaking slave cylinder. do you still have fluid in you master slave cylinder?

oh well your still gonna drop the trans i would still replace the clutch set & slave cylinder while its out.

Well, I already had a manual for this truck (two actually, Haynes and Chiltons...you always need both). I checked it out and read that I have to remove the front 4 body mounts lift up the body, remove the crossmember drop down the angle at the tailshaft. Then I should be able to reach all 7 bolts on the trans/engine. Then there is the hydraulics to deal with and such. The problem with all of this is the following: It just snowed 5 inches in the last couple hours and is tid bit nipply and I now live in a dang apartment. So aside of no longer having the amount of tools I used to, and no lift I could get the job done. Lol, but I dont. I hate sending my truck to the shop, and hate it even more to have to pay some one else to do it. But thanks so much for the great info. I will keep you guys posted on what exaclty the deal was after I sell my left kidney for this rig....
