Hello all again. I am going to be rebuilding a 1984 longbed "K1500"(its going to be a K2500). I need to know what configurations are shown for the 1984 K1500. This way I can pass at a referee and IM station. I know that the stock OEM equipment is a 305/700R4 config. But if they made a 350/350 or 350/400 or 350/700R4 config...Id like to know. This way I can get a little more bang for my buck. So if any of you'se guys know where a website or a specific manual is, please let me know. I am getting out of my K5, seeing as how I have ripped it to shreds. I ought to lay it down proper instead of rolling it down a hill. The plan is to transplant parts into the longbed. Thanks as always-Patrick

As I recall, they did not offer the THM350 or THM400 in a K1500 in 84 so that option is out. I am not sure about the THM400 in 2500 though because I have seen late 80's style K2500 with THM400. The 700R4 was getting widely used by 84 but early models are trouble prone. 700R4's after 87 were fine and earlier ones can be retrofit to the latest 700R4 specs.

Hi Patrick - here's something to consider...
In the most stringent inspection station rules (e.g. Tucson, AZ, Ornage County, CA, etc...) have a pretty simple rule about emissions and inspections, and you're backed (thank god) by federal law which allows you to modify your rig so long as is meets local and federal emissions / safety laws. What I'm getting at is this... Most inspection station (at least the most stringent ones that I'm familiar with - listed above) have a written policy that states drive-train can be modified so long as the following conditions apply:
1) The drivetrain that is replaced, upgraded or enhanced must be of the same year (or newer) as the vehicle being inspected.
2) Any upgrades, repalcements or enhancements must meet federal safety and emissions standards.
In short, if you're going to replace the engine and transmission, I would do two things:
1) Talk with the local IM station and get a printed copy of thier policies and rules so that you can rub their nose in it... errr.... reference it later.
2) Ensure that you're getting the same year or newer drivetrain components.
P.S. - watch the exhaust system... In Tucson, they would bust you if the vehicle came with dingle tail pipe exhaust and you changed it to duals. When I put a V8, tranny and more into my '74 Cruiser, I had to show them the year of the engine and transmission by showing them the decode of the serial numbers.
Don't take this as the gospel though... be sure to get a printed copy of their rules first so that you can be within the guidelines!

Hey, thanks as always, for the great info. I contacted my local Referee and they said the same exact thing. So, I am happy because my engine and tranny donor is of the same exact year. So, thanks for the spot on info...it may be awhile before I do all the swaping...but when I do, I will post pics and details. (cuz I know we all love that stuff)Its just that it dumped 2 feet of snow on me yesterday and I dont have a garage, lol...dang it. [gun][%>o]

Ok, well...the guy who was supposed to sell me the donor truck backed out on me(s.o.b.!!) So now I have to either find another donor truck....or go after something totaly different for me. I am thinking maybe an FJ40 or just rebuilding the Blazer from ground up....or maybe a Scout project. Of course they have to be Bowtie accessorized, lol. But I am just not into cutting and welding a bunch right now (axles and suspension for the FJ and IH). So does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I should build??? I am now all over the place with what I want my freaking project to be...and it is winter and I don't have a garage!!! This sucks!! I would however like something in the pre-emmission era. This way I don't have to deal with it!!

Ok!!!! Well, I finally got the donor truck... A 1986 Chevy K1500...with a decent motor and tranny (needs new seals all around). So, project Okie 4 is underway. We are talking about an emission legal, one ton 1500...I am building this truck to do everything. Mud slinging, rock crawling, sand, snow, ice, and pavement. The plans after the drivetrain include the following, but is not limited too...A bed bob (it is a longbed after all), custom bumpers tied into the chassis, frame stiffening here and there, custom rollbar built into the chassis, possible Blazer bucket seats, some suspension mods...dual shocks in front and rear...but maybe coils front and rear, cross over steering, since I perfer the NP208 for the low gearing...I am considering a slip yoke eliminator kit. Plus much more I am sure, like lighting and custom tool box with a heater in it to keep tools and fluids warm.

Damn! The truck barely fits on the trailer! I love those older Chevy's... I had a '74 and it was a blast to beat the snot out of.

Yea, getting that truck on the trailer makes for a funny story. Lets just say that Uhaul is lucky that those fenders dont look like something off a flat fender jeep!!! Because we did run them over

Here is the latest on Okie 4, I put on the lift and X-Terrains...light bar, complete tune up (there were no exhaust manifold gaskets on either side!!!)Rebuilt extended front driveshaft. Put in new spicer knuckle joints, rear brake drum actuators (hey, I have the smaller drums, kinda rare I think). Next up are some "new" doors, winch, rear ORD disc conversion, brake lines, and I have plans for bobbing the bed right after the rear wheelwell and grafting the tailights and tailgate back on. And much much more (full cage and partial exo-skeleton). |

If anybody has some keen Ideas for Okie 4, let me know....I would like to try a few different things...and I am not really ashamed of cutting into good metal. I am currently limited on welding, due to the fact that I live in an apt...but I have done all these things already in the front parking lot...
