Well...I have finally finished the 3/4 ton conversion on my 1/2 ton longbed chevy(86). I had new drivshafts rebuilt (the cause of an 8 inch lift). And my problem is that the front wheels do not engage into 4x4. I know the transfercase is working properly, as it had before the swap. But the front axle is out of a 76 longbed 3/4 ton with a NP203 and I now have a 208. The axle was a full time 4x4 unit, some one put a part time kit in it with warn premiums. I watched the drive shaft in 2hi and 4hi and 4lo, and the drive shaft turned during all instances. But I never felt the tell tale "hop" of 4x4. So, I am kind of at a loss...and yes the hubs were locked in....and I tried turning them a few times as well as rolling the truck back a bit. But the front wheels never engeged. Any ideas?? I am sure I missed something! I hope.

Take the hubs apart for inspection to make sure they are complete or not damaged. I would do this before I went any further. Also, the 76 should have had a D44 and the 86 a 10 bolt. They are simular in strength so not much was gained here other than bolt pattern for wheels.

The pinion gear in a 10-bolt is actually stronger, but the axle shafts and u-joints are about 10-15% weaker (respectively).
I agree with SnoMan... start by inspecting the hubs. Jack the front axle off the ground, engage the TCase in 4Lo and then lock in a hub. As you turn the wheel, you should hear it click in place. If that doesn't happen, lock in the other hub and repeat.
If nothing happens, disassemble the hubs and inspect. If everything appears normal, then you'll have to look at the differential.

Ok, that all sounds good. But I pulled the hubs apart and nothing looked amiss...so what could be wrong in the diff?? there are no grinding or popping noises...and worst of all, the front axle worked in its previous truck. I drove it, so I know...arggghhhh I have never had this problem before and it is frusterating. It just snowed 3 feet two nights ago, and we are due for a bit more this weekend....

ok, so this is funny. I went back out there...and took the hubs out again, and voila! All of the sudden they decide to work. So I have no idea what that was all about...maybe they were frozen or something (though there was plenty of grease...) thanks again guys, for the info and tips...Merry Christmas to you all!

Glad you got it fixed, but if I were you, I'd take them off again and clean the hell out of them, then repack with new grease. Also, don't overpack them, that's a common mistake and can cause it to NOT engage.

It sounds like they were overpacked. Like Rick suggested, I would tear them down again and clean the hub gears with kerosene and repack them with a light amount of grease because to much grease may allow operation at warmer temps but block operation at colder temps and realy be a pain to use then. This is one place were less is better and more is not. |
