Ok, I hope you remember me.......1991 Chevy P/U.....3.43 gears....P26575r16 tires........blah,blah,blah. Ok, I decided the simplest thing to do was to go get the original tires. Problem is this. It would seem that a P225 75 R 16 is not an awfully popular tire now adays and nobody has it in stock, much less in an all terrain. 15 inch no problem. 16, move one. Because I am trying to achieve as close as to my gearing as I can get, I have been told (Need you all to verify this for me) that a P245 70 r16 is a wider tire and because it is a 70 and not a 75, that the hieght of the tire is the exact same as a P22575R16. So, with that said, is this true and will the gearing be virtually the same with both those tires, as there is a lot more offered to me in that range. And will the wider tire have any effect on my tall 3.43? Thanks Louie

i could be wrong but i think that the first nnumber determinds the width then the second number compared to the first number determinds the height. i think that is right.

Hi Cheaperrooter (boy, your screenname is hard to type),

Here's a breakdown of your tire sizes in good ol' American units, so that it's easier to understand (I've rounded to the 10th of an inch to make it easier).
  • P265 75 R16 = 31.6" tire height, 10.4" width, and 7.3" sidewall height
  • P225 75 R16 = 29.3" tire height, 8.9" width, and 6.6" sidewall height
  • P245 70 R16 = 29.5" tire height, 9.6" width, and 6.7" sidewall height

Here's how metric tires are measured (in case you're curious)

Looking at a tire marked P245/75R16... P = Passenger Tire, LT = Light Truck and ST = Trailer Tire.

245 = the section width of the tire in milimeters (in other words, the tire is 245 milimeters wide).

75 = The "75" equals the percentage of the aspect ratio against the section width of the tire (245).

R16 = Inside diameter of the tire opening (or, to put it another way, the outside diameter of the wheel going into it).

To determine the height of the tire, you must calculate its section height in inches and divide by 25.4 (the number of millimeters in an inch). Next, convert the aspect ratio to a decimal by dividing by 100. Multiply the quotients of these two numbers to find the section height in inches. Double that figure and add the wheel diameter, and you will have the tire’s height.

Anyhow, to get back to your original question here (sorry for the tangent)... It appears that the P245/70R16 is roughly 3/4 on an inch wider, with nearly identical tire height and sidewall height. In short... the dealer is spot on with what they told you.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks Rick, but one slight problem. In your first email to me ever, last month, you said my 265's were equal to about a 31.5 inch tire. This time you said 30.5. I went back to check, because I remember there was a 2 inch diff between 225 and 265. Which one is right? Are my 265's 31.5 or 30.5? Louie

Sorry Cheaperrooter - I had a typo in my response above, which I fixed. (stupid, fat fingers!)

A P265/75R16 has a 31.6" tire height, a 10.4" width, and a 7.3" sidewall height.

As usual, this web site is the best I have ever encountered. The responses are accurate and speedy. I have learned a wealth of information from you 2 guys, Rick and SnoMan. Thanks for everything. Louie

Thanks Louie! That means a lot to all of us, both the stay (myself, Jody, Mike, Patti, Tiffany, Matty, and more), and the folks here on the board that work hard to get answers (SnoMan, Primetimek5, Wide Open, Sublmnl1990, ChevyMan0784, Dan, WalkingTall, and more (I'm sure I'm forgetting a few - sorry boys!)).

We're glad we could help!

Regards, Rick
