I have a 2003 Suburban 4X4 1500 with a 5.3 liter engine and I want to know what kind of gears I have. I thought I had 3.73s until I went out and bought some new brake pads and I was asked what kind of gears i have. I told the guy at Auto Zone that I have 3.73 gears. When I got home I made my way to the rear axle and my new pads were to small. I took the pads back and the pads that were given to me were for a 3.73 gear ratio. He then took out some pads for a 4.10 gear and they matched. So now I am guessing that I have 4.10 gears, how do I know for sure? Is there a number somewhere on the rearend that can tell me or on my vin number or something? I looked all over the net and cant find anything. The reason I am looking for this info is because I had problems with my front axle and it had to be changed out. From what I was told was the new front axle came from an Avalanche and now when I put it in four wheel drive, you can feel a slight jolt when it engages while driving and it makes a moaning sound. So now I think that the front axle has 3.73 gears and the rear has 4.10 gears. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Honestly, I have never really heard of the axle ratio having anything to do with the gear size. Unless what he was really trying to figure out was wheather or not you had a 1500 or a 2500. The 2500 would typically have the larger axle. So maybe the 2500 would have the 4:10s. But you can easily order any Suburban with 4:10s. Now you can check out your vehicle VIN and call up a dealer and they can tell you what came stock. There is a way to check the gear ratio by marking the yoke and pinion and rotating the tires ( on a stand of coarse). And I know the guys here remember how to do that, just not me...lol.

I agree the axle ratio has nothing to do with brake size. Axle housing size/capacity and vehicle GVW does. As far as axle ratio, look in glove box and if it is a GT4 it is a 3.73 and a GT5 is a 4.10. A 1500 could not have a 4.10, only a 2500 could but a 2500 could have a 3.73 too.

Actually you can put any gear ratio in any axle, so long as it can accept the size. Like for a 14 bolt (full floater) you max out at a 5:14 gear ratio. The GM 10 bolt came with factory ratios from 2:56 all the way to 4:56. So it is very easy and quite common actually for a Suburban to have 3:73's. It is a great freeway, stock tire, non towing gear ratio.

Normally the limit for a 14 bolt 10.5 is 5.13 but I have seen after market gears in 5.38 for it recently. The 5.14 was used in the old 12 inch Eaton HO72 that they used until 73 in some models before it was replaced by the 10.5 14 bolt. That old Eaton is/was just about break proof in a 4x4! There is a carrier break at 4.10/4.56 for factory gears in 14 bolt 10.5 (one carrier 4.10 and below and another 4.56 and above) but they make after market thick gears than allow you to use 4.56 and deeper gears on a 4.10 and under carrier. The 10 bolt can go from 2.29 to 5.57. There is a different carrier used below 2.73 so you very rarely see gear below 2.73 from factory anymore (especially since OD came out) The rear axle in a S10 blazer can go as deep as 4.56. There is also a 9.5 inch 14 bolt semi floater that can go as deep as 4.88. It is often overlooked and is a lot stouter than a 10 bolt too.
