I have adopted this nice 83 shortbed, and am going to build er' up. I am going to start on it in 6 weeks when I get home, what do you all think? I was thinking of dove tailing the bed .... I already have to box the frame in places too, and get an ORD frame repair kit for the steering box area.

SWEET! I love those old short-beds. They're tough as nails!

I especially like how well the front rim is attached to the axle. [)]

In all seriousness, this is a really sweet ride. If you do the ORD kit, be sure to ask for Steve Watson (he's the owner, and tell him that Rick at 4X4REVIEW.COM said hello - he's an old friend of mine). They make some of the most ridiculously strong upgrade parts for F/S trucks in the world. The guy is a Cal-Tech mechanical engineer and it definately shows in the quality of products he makes.

Boat-tailing the rear is cool, but I'd prefer BOB-tailing it first, to reduce your departure angle. Plus, you get to keep most of your precious cargo space that way, as you don't much anyhow because it's a standard cab.

Man, there's just something rough looking about those rigs. Good find man!

Thanks guys, yea Webby...those front wheels have a sorta funny story behind em. I am deffinatly wanting to bob it a bit. The main part of the build should only take about a week with minor bumps. One ton running gear, new motor with the Turbo 400 and 205 outa the white long bed. I want to order new leafs, and I want even more to do coils all the way around. But first I have my six weeks of work on the slope first, lol. I will keep you all posted though.

Coils are pretty slick, especially with a good 4-link suspension. However, here is my 2 cents on that (you know I couldn't resist...). I classify 4-link suspensions into 2 categories. Those that work, and those that don't. The cast majority of 4-link suspensions that are built by do-it-yourselfers simply don't work that well. They will either rear-steer, articulate in an improper arc, bind horribly or fail under load. My tech editor (Jody Campbell) is a mechanical engineer, a damn-good fabricator and an overall pretty smart guy. He started to do his 4-link conversion and quickly realized that the geometry and measurements really have to be incredibly precise. So, he spent weeks working with several different engineers and fabricators to design a system that would work well. In short, unless you're buying a 4-link kit from someone like Off Road Design for your truck, it probably won't work that well and you'll end up wasting a lot of money. The flip-side is that a properly designed 4-link is an incredible way to have maximum articulation, good soft ride, and minimal axle wrap. Personally, if I were to do a 4-link suspension, I would go with coil-over shocks. It's more compact (2 units work as one, and takes up less space), and you can adjust the compression / dampening with a spanner wrench, which will come in handy if you want to load up your truck with heavy gear.

Something else you might want to consider is a 3/4 elliptical suspension. The geometry, setup and cost is much easier to deal with and you can get mad amounts of articulation out of it too. You'll have to have a really stout 3-link or a ladder bar to minimize axle-wrap though.

Either setup works perfectly with a bobbed back end, since leaf springs are out of the question at that point.

I hear that. I didnt realize that ORD had a 4 link conversion for FS Chevys. If that is the case, then that is the way i will prolly end up going. But for now I will just stick with the leafs....especially since it is just mud out here and no good rock crawling, bummer man.

Steve doesn't have them on his website yet, but I saw it in Moan during the EJS last year. It is absolutely incredible. I'll drop him a note and see if he can post some pictures and give some information on it.

Heya all, just wanted to give you guys a bit of an update on my shortbed project. I have many other pics, but this is just an overall before I do the cutting and fabrication. Currently it sports the Superlift 8inch all spring lift, and a 3inch Performance Accessories body lift. I put a fresh 350 (40 over with Crane cam, and Keith Black innards, a gear to gear timing set, Weiand intake, Accel high output distributor, 8.8mm race wires, Bosch Plat 4 plugs, Hooker Competition full length headers, and a brand new Holley Truck Avenger carb.) Turbo 350, with a NP208 'case. And 3/4 ton running gear. Yada yada...but it is the basic build. The new rear and front bumpers and tire carrier and roof rack are in process of being built. And I still have fender trimming to do for 42's eventually.

Hey thanks! Actually I have already finished even more since that pic. And I am about to paint it yellow tomorrow, with black accents of course. It has been a 4 week project from the ground up so far.

I will have some new ones after tomorrow, I may have come across a set of 42 inch TSLs and I just painted it yellow. So now you can see how messed up the body really is, hahaha. Good thing it is just for offroad....it was kinda depressing seeing all that crap show up under the paint. I am ditching the "rollbar", it is just in the way...and isnt going to save my bacon any. Kinda going with the "less is more" moto. That and the "ehh, F%@& it!" moto. Lol.

Yeah, those bed bars look pretty red-neck (I'm gonna get flamed for saying that, I'm sure).

It's a sweet truck though...

Sorry guys, for the obnoxiously huge pictures, I keep forgeting to downsize them. But yea, so you can see that I rattlecanned this baby yellow, I like it, still need to finish it with another coat or so. I got those 42s and wheels for the price of a th400 and Np205 that I had laying around. Pretty good deal, bout 500 percent tread in the center and more on the lugs. I am taking my time on the front bumper, I have to fix the frame horns and box the chassis, then make a cradle in there for my Warn. Then I can put the bumper on and put a roller on it. Then I still have the spare tire carrier to fab up.

Yea, next up really is just gears, lockers, I got another TH400 and NP205 (going to have the tranny gone through). And then, it is pretty much done for now. Next summer should entail dovetailing the bed, a dana 60 font end with crossover steering, and more than likely some boxing of the frame (if it doesnt happen this time home). This time home is the winch and a snorkel and the tranny for sure. I would actually like to put a SM465/NP205 setup in it. I am working on getting one for 200 bucks. Low budget is my only constraint. Hahaha, with all the above minus gears and locker and tranny rebuild (if I do it), I am at just under 5,000 total build cost, if you dont count the fact that I had so many things already. And by the time I get the gears and new tranny in it will be like 7k, but that is finished. So I think that is an awsome build cost for this particualar truck. It can get better, but for a truck like this one, not a whole lot better!!! haha

ChevyMan - is it EVER really finished?!?! [:D]

In all honesty, I love budget-built trucks. I honestly think there is more pride in ownership and pride in build-ship when it is done this way. This is a really great build, man! Congratulations!!!

I have a NP 435 in barn gathering dust for a project I never did. All it needs is new shift rails on poppets as it is sound otherwise. I have a NP 208 too. I should sell them someday. I need to clear out some stuff as I am planning a big move in 4 or 5 years.

Hey, thanks Webby. It has been fun building this truck. It is the first ground up build I have done like this. And yes you caught me, it is NEVER finished, lol. But, the rest is all for fun... the major stuff is out of the way (ok maybe I am delusional, haha). And SnoMan, yea sell now! lol, before you get to moving, otherwise you will end up giving it away, hahaha. I am just happy to be able to drive this beast, I will let you all know how it performs. My guess is pretty good in the mud and trails, and a little iffy on the rocks if Im not careful. Hopefully the springs dont take too long to break in.

Well, I actually went with a Superlift setup, the 8inch with the SuperRide shocks (econo shocks at best). Then I ordered 24inch long SkyJacker stainless steel braided front brake lines. And I got both a steering arm and drop pitman arm to level out the drag link. Now I need to either get the D60, or all new tierods. And if I do that, I want the ORD heavy duty ones. So far I like the springs, of course its a bit of a rough ride, but the 42s dampened it. I just have alot of hop from the front at anything over 20mph. I believe it is because my balljoints ar so dang bad. You can rock the wheel and hub and disk back and forth quite a bit. I had to clearance the front drive shaft (CV joint) and install a T-Case lowering kit to compensate for the new angles. And believe it or not, the drive shaft lengths are stock. Call me crazy, but they freakin work great, it is absolutely nuts.
