2500guy - I assume you have a manual shift mechanism in your truck (e.g. levers vs. push button), right?

If so, your linkage just needs to be adjusted a bit. This isn't an uncommon problem for shift levers, as they need adjustment from time to time.

well thats what i thought but i looked at the linkage and it's different from the haynes . The linkage looks like it can only be disconected from the tcase and i'm not sure if i would be able to turn the rod that way as the lack of room under there

You'll either need to adjust it at the linkage end, or from wihtin the shifter mechanism itself. I had an '87 that had the same problems and I was able to disassemble the shifter, clean it up a bunch, and then tighten the shift linage - it cured the same problem (except in that mine wouldn't stay in lo range).

It really sounds like it's only partially engaging in many cases, and adjusting the linage is about the only way to go. That is, unless, there is a problem with the t-case, but I'd focus on adjusting the linkage first.

I don't have any schematics or diagrams for that particular year handy, so I'm sorry I can't be of more assitance than that.

Soaking it in gear oil works pretty good. Put it in a pan of gear oil and heat it up to about 350 to 400 degrees and then let it cool. The heat will expand joints and suck oil in as it cools.
