Are you referring to the encoder motor?

You can upgrade it to 98 and later style which is motor driven. the older one is heat expansion driven and can be troublesome. Cold weather, water can cause issues and when you shut truck off it disconnects as power is required constantly to keep it engaged. (motor driven one does not need power when it completes connect or disconnect cycle)

There are actually a couple of companies (small companies) that make a cable-driven unit. I've heard pretty good things about them too.

I'll see if I can find out who they are and drop a link on here.

You know my view on those things. Everyone I have seen leaves the linkage exposed to mud, snow and worst of all ice in winter which can block its function. I do not know why nobody made a kit to address this. I have found the 98 and later one to be extremely reliable in the worst of conditions. I plow snow and trucks can have nasty snow and ice buildup and be required to function when it is 15 below too (did last winter a few times without fail) If it ever fails it will be replaced with another one. Mine is 8 years old and counting too! (bought it new)

what do you have to do to convert the motor driven one into a 95 are the actuator electrical plugs the same kind of connection and also rick the manual one sounds good too i think its more positive when you want it to be snoman i seen you diagreed but there has to be a way to rout the cable or put it into protective sleve to protect it from the eliments

You need to upgrade harness and add another power wire and such. GM makes a retrofit kit for it. As far as cable with manual, it is not the cable, the cable hooks to external linkage that is totally exposed and then to a dummy actuator. None of this is sealed.

SnoMan is likely right about the sealing issues. I've never used, installed or tested one personally, so I can't comment.

Great tip on the '98+ actuators SnoMan.

Last I heard a GM dealer. Next time I am by one I am going to get the part number for it just to have on hand. It is my understanding ( not 100% sure on years of first two models)that actually 3 actuators were used in those trucks over the years. First style was from about 88 to 91 or 92 and next was 92 to 98 and current 98 to present. The first two were thermo actuated and troublesome at times. The second and third style share mounting style so 2nd version can be ungraded to 3rd version with a wiring harness upgrade.
