A common failure is the vacuum operated front actuator that engages front axle. It is located under hood and has a cable that goes to axle disconnect. Check its function.

See if it is moving in 4x4 mode and it is located on passenger side front under hood. (just follow the cable housing from front diff on passenger side

Yes and no it kinda is and is not in that the actual actuator in mounted on diff but it is power via a cable by a vacuum device under hood. On full sized trucks it is self contained on diff. Also the 4x4 light my not come on if front axle disconnect does not engage axle properly. (two things have to happen for 4x4 drive, one is the Tcase has to engage front drive shaft and the other is actuator has to engage right/passenger side axle shaft.
