Going to be doing some possible 4 wheeling in a month or so. Looking for someone that has HANDS ON knowledge with a come along. Want a 6 ton, but so far 4 tons seems to be the most popular by far. So questions arise.

1) Is a 4 ton sufficient for most stuck applications for my S-10 FULLY LOADED, or the bigger the better like a 6 ton?

2) What do you all recommend as far as a brand goes? I have found some heavy duty, but they are like $325 (6 ton chain). I was thinking more like $150 and under.

Thanks everyone.

Oh, also I forgot. My truck does not appear to have any recovery hooks under the front, even though it is 4 wheel drive. Problem is when I look under the front bumper, I DONT EVEN SEE anywhere to put one. Any ideas?

Cheaperrooter,

You should be okay with a 4-ton come along, That still equates to twice the wieght of your truck, so it should be able to get you out of most situations. My suggestion is to also invest in a 30'x 3" tow strap from Warn, Pro-comp etc, and just don't go wheeling alone. Webby can attest to the many years he and I had no winches and yanked each other out of countless messes with the front and rear tow hooks. As for the tow hooks, does your truck have a lower valiance under the front bumper? Some times there are knock outs for tow hooks to go through and attach to the frame. If not you definately need to buy some high quality tow hooks from a reputable company and drill and mount (or weld) them directly to the frame. If you have a 2" receiver in the rear, you can get an insert for it that will hold a clevis hook that will work great, if not you'll have to mount up some yank points in the rear as well. Best of luck, and have fun.!

Great points Jody!

Here are a few other things to throw in your kit that are pretty cheap too: - Pair of good leather work gloves - A short 3" X 6' nylon strap (called a tree saver). - A good quality pully (this will double the pulling power of your 4-ton come-along (but be careful not to overload your comealong and have it grenade in your hand).

Dude... you crack me up! [:D]

Take a peek at Northern Tools - http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_7743_7743 - their stuff is typically pretty high quality, unlike Harbor Freight, which sells absolute crap.

Now, I would be remiss in my Shephard duties if I didn't suggest that you at least think about getting a HiLift jack instead. These can be used as come alongs, just as well as they can be used as jacks too. And... you get two tools in one (actually three, as you can use a HiLift as a large clamp too).

Baaaaaa... ;)

Did you just use the word "anal" and "toilet" in the same sentence?

Hey... when I flush my toilet upstairs... ;)
