Every time i take off from a stop i hear a clunking noise and when i come to a complete stop it happens too. I took it in to a mechanic and he said that the driveshaft in these years was made out of aluminum and they have always made this noise. After putting on my 6" lift it has just gotten worse. Is there anyone else with this problem and does anybody know a driveshaft shop that makes steels ones.

He's right. While it doesn't make much sense to me, I've been told the same thing from several people over the years (perhaps a wive's tale though?)
I don't believe it is supposed to get worse with a lift however, so that leads me to believe that you might have a u-joint in the driveshaft going south. How much play do you have in the u-joints?

Some people have swithed to a nickel plated slip yoke and said that it eliminated that clunking noise

That's a first for me. I've never heard of a nickel plated version of a slip yoke.
I know that the aluminum driveshaft resonates more than a steel one does, hence the sound of shifting between reverse and drive (and vice versa) is amplified.

No, i think it is just because the nickel plated one is just built stronger. It is used in all trucks 03 to now

It's true Webby. I know cause I have a nickel plated .357, and it makes much less noise with my ear muffs on then my blued version does without my ear muffs on.

Wow, that is quite interesting. Cant say I have ever heard of something like that unless it was one of the following: 1. U-joints
2. Axle shaft play.
3. Ring and pinion play.
4. Transfercase or tranny output shaft play.
5. Or even slip yoke play.
So it is odd, that if NONE of these is the propblem, that your rig would still make that noise. The only other thing I can think of is a broken leaf in the back, loose U-bolts, or sometimes I have heard of the axle tube plug weld breaking. Then you may hear a clunking too. But it would be a bit more noticable. |

I was not sure on the years that they put the nickel plated one in, but I also thought it was the u-joints. So I changed them and it still did it. Then I talked to my neighbor who works at chevrolet and he told me about the nickel plated slip yoke. I put one in and it has never made the noise again.
