Alright here is my problem and it is pretty weird and complicated to understand.

- If I use my four-wheel drive and try to switch into 2HI sometimes it will not switch into 2HI even though the light will indicate that the 2HI is engaged. The way for me is to come to a complete stop and put it in neutral and then switch to 4LO then back up into 2HI all while still in neutral. Then I can go back into 2HI and its all ok. I thought it was suppose to be a shift on the fly system (Between 2HI and 4HI at least)? Any Thoughts?

- Next problem is when I get on the highway and get up to speed and let off (Below 70) everything is perfect. Now when I go as much as 1 mph over 70 and then let off the gas the slightest bit, I get this grinding noise that sounds like the passenger side brake is rubbing but I know it isn't because there is no pull to that side and there is no drag on the truck. I know there is no drag because my dad got behind me in his s-10 and was doing 70 at 2000rpm just like me. Now the only way to stop this noise is to come to a complete stop or at least down to about 1 or 2 mph and then it sounds like something just disengages (possibly the four-wheel drive?) I can’t figure out what the truck is doing, for the life of me. Is something engaged? Or dragging? Or even Broke? Help me out guys! It would me highly appreciated.

sounds like there is an issue in the frontend of that truck probably havin to do with the dissengagement of the passenger side axle from the pumkin the only way to find out is to take the frontend apart on it sorry bro.

What year truck do you have? May not be the axle, could just be the hub assembly.

Its a 2000. And I just bought it used to get rid of a car so I know its been used off-road. But I would like to try to keep it as cheep as I can get it. I have a mechanic in the family but he doesn't know enough about 4-wheel drive to be able to tell. Could this possibly be something with the computer not fully disengaging the 4-wheel drive, or trying to engage it at high speeds?

I sincerely doubt it. if it were trying to engage at speed, it would be a rather unpleasant experience. :)

It's likely a hub or wheel bearing that is going south on you.

WOW!!!! You mean I nailed one right Rick....it could just be the hub assembly. See......see what happens when you promote someone to a Jr. Status......all of the lessons learned in pre-school are now brought foward to elementary school. Can't wait till I make it to college....

Alright guys here is the real test haha. Im starting to narrow down this annoying sound and it it happening at lower speeds now. It started on me yesterday at about 60 mph and then I got off the exit and for shiznits and giggles I put it into 4hi at about 30 and the noise stopped. Its like the front end doesnt fully disengaging. But I have heard that the computer that kicks in the 4x4 is sometimes faulty and sometimes it can be the actuator that is screwing up.... so any thoughts? and thanks for the other hints and suggestions.

Have you checked the hubs and wheel bearings yet?

Yea, I would do that too. Just pop the front wheels of first, and check all your rotating assembly. Turn each one and see if either grinds or feels like theres a bucket of rocks holding it up. If it does, I bet money your bearings are completely shot. If not, check the back out. If you still havent found the issue, pop the diff covers off and check for metal shavings!

Yeah the hubs and bearings have been checked by mechanics and I know from a few problems with other cars that its not a hub or a bearing... I finally found an article online about my exact problem and what it is, is the vaccumm system failing which is making the 4x4 actuator 'half' engage at high speeds and then when you stop it pops that actuator back out. or if you push the 4hi button the sound totally stops. So now its tracing my vaccumm system all over the truck and testing the actuator. But thanks for all the suggestions guys! you've been a big help.

Hi Gooch - I've never heard of that! Thanks for dropping that nugget of information to us.

Please let us know if you find the fix, so that others can learn from it too.
