Was using the a/c on my 2004 Chevy Suburban Z71 yesterday for about 1 hr and ran fine. Stopped truck for about 45 minutes. When got back in, a/c ran warm for rest of day. This morning, when started truck, a/c ran cold and was fine all day. This happened a few times last summer as well. Any ideas???

do you kno if the a/c compressor is turning on all the time? we kno it does when the ac blows cold but when it blows hot. mabye a loose wire connector of one inside the compressor. one way to kno if the compressor turns on when the truck is running is when you hit the ac button or tun the dial to ac the rpm should incrase a bit lets say it normally runs at 1000rpm when you turn on the ac it should increase another might be your switch not working properly

Another way is to pop the hood and look straight into the front of the compressor, where the belt goes around. Have someone turn it on why you watch it. See if it kicks in, to say that the middle of it starts to spin. Its very noticeable. If when its blowing warm, and you turn the ac on, and notice no difference while staring at the compressor, then you probably have a loose connection, best case. Worse case is compressor locking up.....but probably a connection.

yeah we have a suburban that does this. it will be pushing cold air then all the sudden it will push out hot air. turn it off and back on it starts pushing cold air out again. we took it to the dealership and they said it had to do with some flapper, like a really cheap part but you have to remove the dash... ouch. sorry i really dont know everything about it... it was my parents problem, not mine hehe.

That's actually the most likely cause of the problem you're facing. The baffles inside the plenums control the flow of air. Sometimes they get stuck in one position (the little motor goes bad) and it directs hot air from the heater coil, instead of cold air from the A/C unit.

The saga continues. Soon after the last post, I had the system checked and the refrigerant was slightly low. Had it charged to specs and system ran fairly good. Last week, problem started again but the refrigerant is fine. For example, this morning on highway at 50mph, ac blew cold for 1st 10 miles or so. Next 10 miles, air cool but not freezing cold. Got off highway and 20-30mph, system suddenly blows warm for 2 minutes or so, then suddenly goes back to ice cold. Is there a faulty switch I should be looking for? The compressor connections all seem good.

I'm almost certain that it's the baffles that are the problem. I just had to replace the motor on the plenum that did the air mixing on my '06 Silverado HD. Nearly identical symptoms.

Any idea what the part number would be for the motor? Also, how complicated is it to replace?

I'm not sure to be honest with you. They're not too expensive to get (and even cheaper at a salvage yard), but they are a bit of a pain in the rump to repalce (it's tucked up under the dash and difficult to get to). It will probably take you all day to fix it if you don't have the right tools too.

If you're not an avid do-it-yourselfer, you might consider taking it to a local shop to have it replaced / fixed, as it would be cheaper than having the dealership do it.

yeah our problem is getting worse with our 04 suburban. do you have to remove the dash in order to work on it? if there's a way to work around it i might actually spend some time on it.

I have an '06 Silverado HD, but I'm assuming that they're the same. We took ours in under warranty to have it fixed, but it appears that you can get to it without removing the dash. Sorry, I don't know for sure either way. A quick peek at a Haynes or Chilton's manual at the local auto parts store will tell you for sure though, and it won't cost you. :)

it all has to do with the blend door actuator it is a really cheap part and it is common for them to go out and then they will push the hot air in. used to happend to me in my uncles parts truck all the time we replace the actuator and there was cold air agian. he had the same 2500 hd to.
