I have an 07 Sierra Z71 with the 265/70R17's and I am wanting to get new tires... One was destroyed running over some scissors and I just want new tires, the wrangler at/s stink, no traction. After I ran over the scissors, I get a Tire Pressure Monitoring System Error, it shows the RF tire with 1 PSI or none, but that's not the tire that was damaged. What gives? Is it possible I ran over the scissors with RF tire but did no damage, except to TPMS, perhaps cut some wire or something. I have no idea how the TPMS works, the TPMS is reading the spare tire that I put on after the road hazard.

I found some 285/70R17's will these fit or will I have to crank up the torsion bars? If so how much, I have a little trouble getting in at stock height due to hip problems... I am not even an old man, but I sure move like one.[gramps]

The local tire shop says I need to crank up the torsion bars, but I have read on here that if you mess with them too much it will cause parts to wear out faster

I know this is a common question, I searched but couldn't find info related to the new model. So please bear with a newbie.

Thanks

Well. I think, in your case, that you should try and stick with your stock tire size. It sounds like that would fit best for you. No sense in spending money for something you really dont want, ie: lifting it to fit tires. So, my recommendation is to go to a good reputable tire shop, and get some new BFG AT's in the stock size. You will be very satisfied with its all weather traction. I guarantee it, lol. I have two sets for different trucks, and have run countless sets on others. I will never go with another AT unless it is a super good deal...lol. Also, be sure to relay to them your Pressure Sensor troubles, and when and how it started. If they are a decent shop, they will know what to look for and how to fix it. That is my .02 cents. Hope it helps!!

Johnny - first, welcome to the boards!

The TPMS system is a wirelessly transmitted sensor in each wheel that attaches to the valve stem. When you get new tires, the tire shop automatically replace the TPMS sensors - it's standard practice, and they usually do it for free, or for a nominal price. When you get your new tires (I agree with ChevyMan on the BFG All Terrains by the way), have them replace the sensors in each wheel. If this doesn't fix the TPMS problem and the tire shop can't fix it, take it to the dealership since your truck is still under warranty. I'm pretty confident that simply replacing the TPMS sensors in each wheel will fix the issue though.

Thanks all for the input and information, I have BFG AT's on my old junker project 79 Blazer and they are good tires, really good in the snow. But I am in Oregon and we do get a bit of mud...I am not a bogger or anything like that, but I do like to run the logging roads and explore our back woods areas. So I would like to find something with a little more traction, the Old Big O XT looked like a good tire.

Also thanks for the help on the TPMS, it's just weird that the tire that wasn't damaged all of a sudden loses communication with the TPMS. I will have the tire shop check it, if they can't do anything with it I will go to the dealer. All the electronic items on new trucks scare me, the other day I started it up and I had no gauges, nada nothing, the truck ran ok so I called Onstar and they connected me to someone who helped with the problem. Still sort of scarey that a simple problem disabled all my gauges.

Thanks for all the help.

Take a hard look at the Bridgestone Dueler M/T or the Firestone Destination M/T (roughly the same tire). We did a review on both of them, which you can see at: http://www.4x4review.com/products/tires/dueller.asp and http://www.4x4review.com/products/tires/Firestone-Destination-MT.asp.

The Bridgestone is an incredible tire that is tough as nails, will last a VERY long time and is moderately aggressive. We ran a set of 32's on 3 different rigs, hitting all types of off-road (mud, rocks, trails, etc.) for years and they performed very well. We actually ran these same tires in the very first Ultimate Adventure with Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off Road magazine. They worked very well.

The Firestone Destination M/T's are also very good tires too, and while we tested them in tough terrain, we haven't put the same number of miles on them yet, so we can't effectively say if they last as long or are as tough. Although, I assume they are.

Anyhow, they're pretty inexpensive tires, ringing in at around $180 each for a 33 X 12.5 R 15.

Hope that helps.

P.S. You can see other tire reviews at: http://www.4x4review.com/products/tires/

Regards, Rick
